Title: 8MM Mauser availability
Post by: Jay on January 11, 2008, 10:45:37 AM
Does anyone fire much of the 8MM Mauser, (7.92 X 57)? I just acquired a Turkish rebuild of a GEW 98 and was wondering about ammo availability. I have no experience with this round at all. The rifle came with about 70 rounds of old Turkish ammo (stamped 1950). Where is a good place to buy ammo?

My roommate has an old 8mm Mauser; it's a fun round to shoot. When he bought his rifle, the ammo was plentiful and cheap, but right now the ammo is scarce and expensive. I usually get surplus ammo from either http://www.aimsurplus.com or http://www.wideners.com. Right now it looks like they both only have sniper grade surplus ammo thats running $315/900. :'(

I'll search some other sites and see if I can find something for you.

Holy silver bullets, Batman!  :o

How much sense does it make to fire $3.00 ammo out of a $80 gun???  ???

Looks like I bought some ammo and got a rifle for free!

Ammo prices really are getting ridiculous. Even 7.62x54r is up to $80/440!!!

Jay, ya just gotta roll yer own................ I have a Butcherized Gew. 88 that I handload for......... the barrel has been hacked off to 18 1/2 inches, so typical loads given in manuals make for HUGE muzzle blast. It isn't so much a rifle as a flame thrower.........

Taking into consideration the weaker steel and action of the 88 Mauser, I can only get 30/30 performance levels out of it, but it's fun to shoot............

There is plenty of 8x57 available.  The stuff from Prvi Partizan is nice, reloadable ammo that is more than cheap enough for bolt gun use.  The Wolf is also good.  Yugo surplus is the best for bolt guns, the Rom is also quite good if you can find it.

Speaking of Romanian surplus 8x57, if anyone finds any or has some to sell please let me know.  I have an MG42 to feed and it only likes the Rom or original German ammo.
