Title: Calling Coyotes
Post by: Mudinyeri on January 04, 2015, 02:24:20 PM
Any experienced coyote callers here?  They're starting to overrun our farm and I need to clean house.  What calls do you use?  What techniques?  Anyone using any of the smart phone apps successfully?

I shot coyotes while riding the combine as a kid but have no experience calling them.

Thanks.

O Joy!!!   Calling Coyotes.   (Then shooting them, of course.....)
Just Thinking About it Gives Chills and Thrills...   On the stand, I'll take a coyote over a deer, every time.   Don't have to gut it out and bring it home.

Two Main Ways:

1.  Critter/Prey Calls
Coyotes want to eat.   All the time.  Especially in April-June when they are raising pups.  So any kind of squeaker call, distressed rabbit call, bird-in-trouble call will work all year long.  Electronic calls are good, but you gotta lug 'em around.  Even lightweight electronic calls are one more thing to haul.

2.  Coyote Calls
>Challenge call:
Says I'm the New Coyote in your territory; time for you to move on.   Brings up very alert coyote, ready to fight or run.
>I'm Here Call:
Says I'm just a Coyote, checking it at my leisure, usually about evening when the deer are coming out.   Often brings an answering call.   But usually works only late in the day.
>Female Coyote in Heat:
Works very well in February during the mating season.   The coyotes are running the creek beds and not as alert as usual.  Especially the males.  Will also bring females who don't want breeding area invaded.

Recommendation:

Go to the web and look up the "Bucking the Odds" videos.   Those two guys (Lance Benson and Uriah Wurst) slaughter coyotes.   They have over 30 great videos about coyote shooting.   They use electronic calls with a MOJO Super Critter wiggler.

Geez.... Now you've got me all worked up to get out and sit still in this Godawful weather!!

Does anyone happen to know if they're worth much this year?

Does coyote hunting require a permit or can you just hunt them at will?

Is it just me or did anyone else think "Not hard, as long as they are carrying their phones and you have the number."? Sorry, sometimes my mind just goes there.

FWIW..........................

If you can produce one or several of the 40 different fox calls, such sound will also bring the coyotes in.

[Conversely, I guess if you can produce a reasonable facsimile wolf call, they will clear out.]   After all, who has ever heard a wolf these days??

But then, I really dunno.   Just speculating.

I don't think anything is worth much this year.  Except maybe bobcats.

When I was a kid, I once howled as loud as I can at like 1 AM on the farm. Set off every coyote within a few miles, and our own dogs too! No one came to see me though.

Time for an Update.

Anybody Busting Any Coyotes.............??

I bought this brannew Savage B-Mag .17WSM for hunting the creeks and thickets.......shorter call-in shots.   You know....That SuperFast Nail-Gun-Cartridge Rimfire Rifle.

Went and sat along a promising creek bed in Otoe County.   Tooted my critter call.   Coyote came out of hiding immediately.  He stood still.  And then posed sideways nicely.  Whereupon I tried to take the shot with the front lens cap on.   Then the bill on my cap hit the scope.  And knocked off my hat.   And glasses.  Then a branch slapped my cheek.  Made my eyes water.

Eventually I recovered and shot.   Coyote ran.

I can still hear him laughing.

Haven't been out yet either, anyone know what the pelts look like?  Mange?  My son popped 2 next to his calving lot yesterday but not sure he spent time looking at the hide.

Well, that's a very nice coyote pic.

And..........

I wish I could get my bird dog to point like that.

Also, I'm hopin' maybe that coyote will venture outside of Chalco Hills.

Plus.......that pelt appears to be in prime condition.

Using NV and a Foxpro here with good success. Partner lives near the river and has caught 3 cats. 2 are just OK but the 3rd a 21# female has great spots, best cat I've seen in a few years. Petska isn't paying too well this year and another guy is a crook. What are coyotes bringing in you guys areas?

I can't speak to coyote pelt prices, because I haven't busted any so far this winter season.

But hear me out for a minute here:

As a kid my dad and I and others tramped all over the river bottoms in the pitch black dark trying to catch up with the hounds while hunting raccoons.  Cold, muddy, tree limbs slapping your face, dim carbide lamps, stumbling, etc., etc.  Hard work for little return.  Especially when the coon treed up in a huge cottonwood and wouldn't look at the spotlight.  That's the hard way.  Hunt all night for one or two coons.  Or most often, nothing but the chase.

As a grownup I learned to just get a Critter Call and a .22Mag and sit on an open river bank or sandbar, toot the Critter Call.  Then when the raccoon (or whatever) shows up, turn on the light and pop the critter.  Then just walk over and pick him up, move to another spot.

Now...I'm wondering:  Are you getting any other critters to respond to your calls beside the bobkitties...........?  Coyotes..?  Coons..?  Possums..?  Feral dogs or cats..?  Yetis...??  Seems with the FoxPro, just about anything would respond.

ive been out a few times.  I only use NV and thermal, so i mainly hunt at night.  i can get all sorts of things to come to my calls, usually coyotes, owls and the occasional skunk.  Raccoon calling is super fun too.

i went hog hunting last weekend.  saw numerous coyotes that we drove past because we didn't want to scare the hogs.  we tried hog calling, it didn't work.  but driving under NV and thermal scanning did work, really well in fact.  i'm upgrading my thermal capabilities now.  watch out animals, you won't be able to hide.

Currently using a Pulsar Trail XP50. When we call it's a mix of coons, possum and a lot of owls but we only shoot coyotes. Partner is the cat trapper. He uses box traps because he normally lets the females go, unless they are really good looking.

Four 'Yotes in one night is a good night, any night.

We only got about 4" and the snow ended here by 3. Went out about 7, no snow but breezy and cold. Shot 3 when the group came in, Mom and 2 pups that weren't too bright.

How do you like the Trail?  I've thought about upgrading.  Looks to be a pissed off kitty, lol.

Yes the cat is not happy, they never are. I really like the Trail. 16x capability but if you get above 10x the image gets a little grainy. Other than that it's a keeper for me. Partner is 40ish and reads too much. About weekly it's "you gotta get this or that". I'm much older and done buying. You can get things done for less money but if you can buy the best you can afford the first time.

When what you've already got gets good results (4 coyotes/night), just go with it.  It Works.

What are you using for critter calling........Some kind of electronic caller...??

BTW...Coyote mating season starts in about a month.   Estrus calls work pretty darn good.   Pulls in those coyote lounge-lizard types.  Sorta mean, in a way.  But what-the-hell, it's just coyotes.

Foxpro. Controlling it remotely to keep their focus away from us. It seems they are pairing up now. Like the Mom and pups we shot, she apparently wasn't in heat or the new guy would have run the pups off. It isn't always good, nothing last night. I'm tired so I'm not going anywhere tonight.

Coyote Hunter Alert:  February is coyote mating season.

Time now to gear up for coyote winter hunts and calling.

Plus some area baiting with cat food.   (No, that's NOT cheating.   They're coyotes.)

Just remindin' y'all.    Thassall.
