Title: Legislation to trace ammo
Post by: Aldo on December 10, 2008, 09:53:08 AM
Well....here's an interesting read....won't these kind of folks ever give up?  It seems like there's always another angle for them to come from.

This one is about legislation bills introduced in numerous states by "Ammunition Accountability" to make coding technology mandatory across the U.S.  >:(

And when ya check out the "Ammunition Accountability" website (it's linked in the article), one of their rationale lines is:

"Then when a potential criminal purchases a box of 9mm cartridges, the box of ammunition and the bullets? coding numbers would be connected to the purchaser in a statewide database."

Now, tell me....what friggin' "potential criminal" is gonna "purchase" a box of ammo?!?!  What about all that dumb black-market stolen stuff???!!

What I see as a problem with this is False Positives: what is to ensure that out of MILLIONS of test samples, what is to prevent a glitch in the system from sending .gov goons out to arrest some innocent person with a no-knock warrant ?   Because, you see, the .gov NEVER makes an error!  If the innocent homeowner shoots and kills a member (or members!) of the SWAT team when they break down his door at 3 AM, he is no longer innocent, is he?

And what would prevent some thoughtful critter from scooping up a handful of your brass at TheBulletHole to drop at the crime scene?  Nothing.... but that would justify one of those 3 AM visits, would it not?

That's if you can afford to practice with the new expensive ammo you'd have to buy...

Here's a link from the National Shooting Sports Foundation about "microstamping" (what it is, its problems, its legislative threats, and resources).  FYI: it has already been passed in CA, and will take effect January 2010; and a bill has been introduced into the Georgia legislature!

Hopefully we can keep this from coming our way here in NE.

The thing that sucks about this is these losers couldn't get anyone to buy into their bullcrap when they tried to pitch it to the ammo manufactures so they are trying to get it legistated. They are the only one that stands to make any money on their patented idea. It is going to add significanly to the cost of ammo and force us reloaders out of shooting on the cheap. They have been trying to push it through the state legislations and so far are not having a lot of luck. It's a shame that they can even get it considered.

Guess I will be buying some case catchers.
Wouldn't want someone picking up my used brass and leaving it at a firearm crime scene, would we?
