Title: 18.5" barrel shotgun
Post by: Neeco on February 12, 2013, 12:50:38 PM
Do you need an FFL to do the transfer on a Mossberg Chainsaw?  18.5" barrel.

Lancaster County says anything under 18", right?

Shouldn't....   Cabela's sells a Rem 870 "Home Defender" package with 2 barrels..   One is 28" with RemChoke systen, the other is a 18.5" Improved Cyl with rifle sights.  Standard sales transaction from them.

While Cabela's is an FFL, there were no restrictions as to what I could do with the gun/barrel after I left the store.

What did that run if you don't mind me asking.  That is exactly what I am looking for... I am having second thoughts about this chainsaw, and having to mod it back to a standard Mossy 500.

He said he got it at Cabelas and they made him have his pistol permit and treated it as such.

Any shotguns with less than an 18" barrel are NFA items.  Over 18" is just like any other long gun.

That is what I took from the law, so he must have had an issue with an employee.

Eitherway, I backed out of my interest for the "chainsaw".   Other than my interest in the 870 Home Defense combo kit, this thread is irrelevant now.

OK - I looked at the Chainsaw....
The pistol grip plus the 18.5" bbl may have something to do with the way it was handled....

In my case, since my 'other' 20 gauge wandered off to Texas with my son, I needed to replace it.

The 'Defender' came with synthetic stock and 2 bbls - 1 choke (Mod.)  Cost was in the $325 range IIRC..

What I have done is rig up the syn. stock and 28" bbl as one gun...
I took the 18.5 bbl and put it on a 'youth' stocked 20 ga. I had.  It is now quite short overall and very maneuverable in close quarters.

An 18.5 bbl could be had for around $150.00 in either 12 or 20 ga.

And the minimum overall length of the shotgun or rifle has to be 26" or greater, unless it is registered as a pistol.

I can't even find that package at Cabellas.  Was it a rifled 18.5? Or a standard short barrel?

Here are the specifics off of the box..
Remington 870 Express Magnum, 20 ga, "Tactical Combo" package.  26" RC bbl with Mod. choke. 18.5" bbl cylinder bore w/rifle sights.  There is no rifling in this 18.5 bbl.
