Title: Any motorcycle riders in here?
Post by: Jesse T on January 17, 2009, 04:05:14 PM
Interesting proposed law this year in the legislature...

http://www.nebraskalegislature.gov/FloorDocs/Current/PDF/Intro/LB200.pdf

Basically exempts you from wearing a helmet on a motorcycle if you are over age 21.  Also makes it illegal to be riding at any time without eye protection.

This is particularly of interest to me because I often ride with my full face helmet on, but with the visor up (particularly in nice warm weather). I guess I will have to get some safety glasses or wear my oakleys that i have for the range when riding.

Thoughts?

I grew up in Kansas where you only had to wear eye protection after a certain age and did a lot of riding that way. Since joining the Navy I have been required to wear a helmet and wouldn't ride without one. I also ride with full gear (boots, jacket, jeans, etc). Been stationed in a lot of big cities and have seen, read, watched news about a lot of people going down. If you want to ride without that's your business but I don't think that the insurance, hospital, state or anyone should be required to pay for your brain-dead dumb butt if you go down. As I said, your business, just don't expect "us" to pay. If they put that in the bill I'd be all for it.

I'd agree, I also don't ride without gear after being down twice myself.

So would it be fair to say that the two of you are not members of A.B.A.T.E.
http://www.abateofne.com/

Forcing a motorcyclist to wear a helmet is like;

That is kind of like you can carry a pistol but must wear a flak jacket.

Can go to the beach but must cover all of your skin, including your face.

Can drive a car but must wear a five point safety harness.

I drag race one of my bikes, and yes have all leather racing suit and Snell 2005 Approved Helmet.
More than the track requires.

Also have a broken wing patch, went down hard with my safety gear I survived.

We have much greater threats to our country's economic situation than to worry about if a rider got hurt with or without a helmet.
Before the hospital treats the rider.
How about no treatment for illegal aliens.

In the USA hospitals cannot refuse treatment on status be it insurance, race, residency or helmet on.
No discrimination period.

Amazing how so many of us grew up riding a bicycle with no helmet, shared a bottle of Coca-Cola, we all drank from the same water hose, had big wheels (not I but some), played out side, had dirt claude fights, fist fought and shook hands when finished then often became friends.

Do you really think that we need more government?

Let those who ride decide.

It is already law for eye protection and one mirror. Don't ride with your visor up at speed, bad bad.
One bug and you could be down, and hurt helmet or not especially with a powerful crouch rocket.
The visor of your helmet is considered eye protection, just do not open it completely, common sense.

 Edited because of spelling.

I never said that I was for more, bigger, government. I want the government to turn more power over to the states as it should be.  But I do believe that I shouldn't have to pay for your (that's the royal "your") screw up. I don't believe in subsidies, bailouts, extended welfare (it should be a hand up, not a hand out), or allowing illegal?s to receive the benefit of honest peoples labors. If they want to come to the US let them come in the correct, legal way like they should. I have no problem letting those who ride decide; just don't make us pay for it. You see these riders with a tank top or no shirt, shorts, flip flops and riding like complete idiots swerving through traffic like they are daring fate. I don?t want to pay for their mistake with higher insurance rates. Then some POS lawyer talks them or one of their family members into filing a BS lawsuit asking for damages from everyone from the state for some fault with the road, the bike maker, any car within 100 yards, etc. But, I digress. I am a simple man; I believe that you take responsibility for your actions and pay your debts. Do you remember back in high school basketball when you fouled someone you were required to raise your hand to say "it was me"? Do they even require that anymore? It's a small thing but it taught us to raise our hand and say I'm responsible for that! DO I SMELL SOAP!? Enough of my rant, NEXT!!

Slow down take a deep breath.
More laws are more government federal or state. What is required is insurance if they give you a discount for signing a piece of paper stating that I will wear a DOT approved helmet or my insurance is void fine.
I am in agreement with you on the not from my taxes or raising my insurance angle, completely.
My hand is up ref.

I also have seen to many motorcycle accidents and fatalities while being a EMT for ten years.

Gotta go to much soap in the dish washer.
Bubbles all over the house.

I have had bikes all my life, but happen to be in between bikes right now. When I ride (on the street), I cross the river so I can ride without my hat, but I will never ride without eye protection again. With no helmet, the only person I will ever hurt is myself. I took a junebug in the eye back when I was in High School just a mile from my house and that was about my last day on this earth. The pain was unreal. I still remember it distinctly. My eyes instantly watered up (both of them) and I could not open them no matter how hard I tried. I ended up crossing the yellow line and ended up in the ditch on the opposite side of the road. It's embarrassing to admit that a bug in my eye took me off my bike, but a junebug directly into your eyeball at 60 mph is something I never want to experience again. Thank God no one was coming at me in the other lane.

I had a plump juicy one hit me in the forehead while going about 75 mph about 15 years ago, I can't imagine the pain from getting hit in the eye. You're lucky you still have an eye.

I lived on a  "76 Goldwing for a few years back in the mid seventies...always wore a Bell full faced helmet back then....But I tend to support whatever makes the people FREE to live their lives as they choose, until that freedom interferes with mine. So I find myself unable to support the denial of freedoms, even those that I detest (I won't mention them here) lest the same be done to me by others that find my lifestyle detestable.

I like the old NRA bumper sticker phrase...VOTE FREEDOM FIRST !

I ride and been at it for 30 plus years. My wife rides and so does her now 73 year old dad. This past fall I took my nearly 4 year old for her first ride. She dug it hard!
Anyway I am for helmets, like real helmets not chilli bowls, 1/2 and 3/4 helmets are acceptable. And the reason I am that way is because I do not care to pay for someone elses medical bills. I like to help folks out but I would like to be asked first. A lot of riders/owners do not even have a motorcycle license let alone insurance. If that person gets hurt and they have no insurance guess who pays for it, not to mention the bad rap the other riders take because of it. Just like when there is a gun related accident. Doesn't matter what the facts are all guns are bad or that seems to be what a lot of non gun owners think.
If there was a way to keep uninsured/unlicensed folks off of bikes then that would be different. Though I would still wear my full face helmets.

Is that a V65 Magna the lady is astride?  I always loved how fast those were.

Yes that is or was my wifes V65 MAGNA. When we decided to start adding to the family we sold it. And that was 5 years ago.
Are children are now 4 years and the youngest is 21 months old. And we are stopping there. So my wife will start riding again this year. We are looking for a bike that she likes, of course none of mine or what I like is what she likes.
But first there is a Taurus Judge for her in the immediate future.

Found a couple pics of our old ratrods. We had to sell them a while back when things were real tight, but I hope to back in the saddle so to speak by next summer. This has been the longest I have ever been without a bike, and I don't like it.

My Dyna Lowrider that I had the evolution built in, then cut up and spray painted. Kinda made a death trap out of it (it was screaming fast for an evo), but that is my style. It sure was purty when I bought it, but I took care of that right away.  8)

Kim's CB550. It was already ratty when we bought it, we just helped it along.

I have a xr650 l and love it. I won`t ride with out a helmet and face shield. I caught one of those big yellow and black killer bees on the forehead back when I was 16, I was on my old sl 350 on the south river road. Man that hurt.

I ride a 03 BMW R1100S, Titan Silver, with a tall windshield, and have hard cases for it. My next bike will be a BMW GS. We go on a few poker runs during the summer, one in Kansas. We don't use a helmet down there, unless part of the trip is in Nebraska.

Let those who ride decide. I love the feeling of riding without a helmet, but I know the risks. Do the insurance companies pay for the smokers who have cancer? The sun bather with skin cancer? The football player who blows a knee? The bullrider who breaks an ankle? If you pay for the insurance, damn right they should pay when you need it.

I hate being told to wear my seat belt, that should be my decision, not the State of Nebraska's. What next, all guns must be equipped with a trigger lock when not in use?

Dont give them any more ideas...

LB200 (the helmet law changes) had a hearing in march but I don't think it has advanced any.  Have not talked to any senators about it either but never hurts to push a little..

I used to ride a Buell.  Now my disposable income is less disposable, and I no longer ride.

I still have my Aerostitch jacket in the closet.  I think my helmets are still at my parents' house.  I always rode with a full-face and would never consider anything less.  I spent way to much on college filling my fat Irish melon with knowledge to risk emptying it on the highway at 65 mph.

I've been looking for another Honda XL350R or XL600R for about 4 years now.  I've missed out on 3 of them since last fall.  If someone knows of a decent one for sale, please let me know.

I'm an EMT-B and the wife is the state trauma coordinator, go figure.  I'll wear the brain bucket, if nothing else, OPEN CASKET!
Here's a pic of my 1981 KZ 550 (9200 miles) and this is the basement by the way.  No way the wife would let me park it on the wood floors upstairs...

Why the extra rugs under the bike?  It's not like it is a Harley or anything.   ;D

BTW, that is one of the sweetest looking KZ's that I've seen in quite a while.  I've had a few, none even close to being that nice.

Just insurance to have a rug under it.  It is 28-years old. I'd hate for a seal to go bad over the winter.  We're getting new carpet this summer along with a basement remodel.  You can bet my parking pass will be revoked.

Just a note to say hello. Long time rider and shooter. I have been riding Moto Guzzi bikes for over fourty years. Shooting longer than that. I presently have three Guzzis in the shed and ride daily. Dont get me wrong. I have never seen a motocycle or scooter that I didnt want to own for one reason or another and appreciate the qualities and pride of ownership those of you who ride other brands have. I have just plain been cycle crazy almost all of my life. Started out riding Kowasakis and BMW but the first Guzzi put the hook in me for life. The only other addiction that has come close is firearms.

Well, I finally found an enduro.  1989 Kawasaki KLR650 with about 17,200 miles.  Not great shape, but not beat to death either.  Not sure if I'll keep the stock paint job or go "camo crazy" on it.  I'll have to do a little work to it before I call it "road-worthy", but not a whole lot.  Not too bad for $700.

Now, who wants to buy some rifles and shotguns?  ;)

Oddly enough, my first post here is not about firearms, but motorcycles.  Weird.  I have two bikes, a 1979 Suzuki GS 750 and a 1978 Suzuki GS 750 that is a sort of on again, off again "turn it into a sort of cafe racer style" project bike.

As for helmets, do whatever you want (IMO) but I'm going to keep wearing a full face all the time.  Even when over in Iowa.  My face is too pretty to mess up.  At least that's what I tell the wife.  Not sure if she agrees or not.

I bought a Harley Heritage Softail Classic last week, Now have about 450 miles on it. The last time I rode was 37 years ago, and a much smaller bike. That said, I am taking it easy and relearning what I need to be able to do to stay alive. I took the Safety Council's Basic Rider Course earlier this month and it was a big help ing getting my bearings.

The Patriot Guard website is off line at the present time. I was contacted by a rider to inform me of a street naming ceremony this coming Sunday to honor a fallen Army CWO whose chopper was shot down a few years ago. Info is:
Time:  2:00 p.m.
When: May 30, 2010
Where: Saint Roberts Catholic Church
              120th Pacific, N.E. corner

The PGR is looking for as many folks as possible to honor this soldier. Not necessary to be a PGR member.

I ride a 1995 KZ1000P which is a Full dressed Police model.
I just returned from a long weekend trip with a few buddies, to Truman Res. Warsaw MO. and I definately have a sore rump to show for it.
My friends all ride HD, so my wife said it was 3 Hogs and a Kaw.
We had great weather and a great time boatin, eatin, and drinkin.
Before any one says it, I never drink while riding, or ride after drinking. But I do usually carry concealed on the bike, I left it home cause I didn't think I could go thru IA with my weapon yet..

Kim and I ride our old shovel head as much as we can. We flew down to Florida in April for a work related convention with another couple. Well, the convention was not as interesting as we had hoped, so we played hookie one day and rented two Harleys from one of the Orlando dealers and rode over to the gulf coast and back. 300 miles on a new Fatboy an Street Glide. Had the time of our lives. Well, at the dealership, both Kim and I as well as our friends spotted bikes that we both fell in love with, and to make a long story short, we both ended up buying Harleys in Orlando. We bought a Heritage and our friends bought a Springer. Being the spur of the moment, live by the seat of our pants kind of folks we are, we stuffed as much of our clothes into our saddle bags as we could, shipped the rest home, and rode our new to us Harleys 2000 miles back to Nebraska. We took an extra 5 days, and took our time getting home. We only rode interstates when we had to. We rode through Tennessee lenghth wise east to west on beautiful two lane roads, and spent an entire day in the Ozarks winding through some of the best scenery of our trip.

We had an amazing time, the trip of a lifetime for all of us actually.

Yeah, a couple of weeks ago we were able to sneak out of work for a little while on a Sunday. There were four couples in our group.

It was a really bad, really freak deal. In a section of road construction, where the lanes were uneven, Kim's brother caught the edge of the lip just right and it sent them down HARD. They were not drunk, and not screwing around, just changed lanes at the wrong time in the wrong place I guess.

My bro in law broke some ribs and suffered some pretty bad road rash. His wife suffered a punctured lung, a bruised brain (minimal swelling fortunately), severe road rash, and pretty much just got the heck beat out of her all over. She was in intensive care for several days. Looking at their helmets, I am going to say that I don't believe they would be with us today if they were not wearing them.

They are both out of the hospital now and slowly recovering.

I'll tell you what, seeing what I saw that day has really changed my outlook on wearing a helmet.

Yes I know that full faced Bell I wore was hotter than hell, but the two times I had to lay my Goldwing  down,  I was damn glad for case saver bars and a good helmet.

I know what you mean about a full faced helmet, I have tried on the 1/2 helmets and feel like there is just not enough protection there for me. My buddies all wear those, and t-shirts when they ride, and I am all bundled up in a leather jacket, boots, and gloves.
I just cringe when I see young people riding in shorts, sandals, and a tank top. Skin loses when it meets concrete.

Well, the KLR650 will be going down the road to a new owner(soon, I hope) and is being replaced by this:

1983 Interstate with 64,000 miles.  It needs a little TLC, but is in darn good shape for being nearly 30 years old.  MUCH smoother ride than the KLR, though it probably won't be nearly as much fun in traffic or on gravel roads.

If this is Blake, I think we went on a GS ride about 4 years ago. I had a GS 1100 at the time. I'm riding a BMW 1100 RT as my daily rider now. Still have a couple others that I play with but use the Beemer as regular transportation.
As far as helmets, helmet laws are a civil rights issue, wearing a helmet is a safety issue. I wear all the gear all the time. That's MY personal decision.   RJ
BTW- if Hermit ISN'T Blake you have some great bikes. I'm a fan of the old school 4 cylinder Zukes.

Newbie rider here. Recently purchased a not quite brand new 82 Maxim 650.  :tool: great (cheap) transportation. Got my license on second try.  Now I don't feel so out of place with the PGR. I had all kinds of excuses and reasons for getting a bike, but , like firearms, need really has nothing to do with it, I just wanted a big boy's bike!

omaharj, yes, that's me!  Great memory!  I remember that ride fondly.  The only bike that wouldn't start after lunch was the modern bike (GSX 750), heh.  Well, it wasn't funny for the owner....

I actually haven't been to the GSresources in ages....in fact, I think my user id and all that has expired.  I still have the bike(s) but haven't ridden much this summer, I'm a frail and delicate flower and hate the heat like we've had most of the summer.

Been riding all my life, so it seems.  Currently I have an '08 KLR and plan on keeping it for quite a while.  I love the swiss-army-knife capabilities of it.  Previously I've owned mainly Kawasaki Concours' and did two Iron Butt Association rides on them: 1000 miles in 24 hours and 1,500 miles in 36 hours.

As for the helmet laws:  Yeah, it probably should be a personal choice.  But I would only support a repeal of it that INCLUDES an iron clad way of enforcing additional insurance on those that choose not to wear a helmet.  I don't want to pay for a lifelong vegetative state because of someone elses decision not to wear.

Frankly, I think the choice not to wear protective gear is natural selection at work, a refining of the species that helps weed out the unintelligent from future reproduction.

Yeah my first post on a gun forum.....bike related....it was bound to happen. 8)
I've ridden numerous bikes over the years. I traded the '98 Valkyrie that I had since it was new on a '09 Road King this spring.....& been having a blast all summer! Last month us & another couple did a lap around Lake Michigan on it & their Victory Vision......helmets & leather included.
Turns out that the empty nest is kind of a fun spot to be in!

...Josjor......I did a 1000 mile Iron Butt Bun Burner on the Valk a couple of years ago. Now I've got an excuse to step up to the next level!.......my tag....

Now that the ice is broken I might just show up on another thread or two!

this thread needs a bump.

the new project: 1983 Kawasaki GPz1100 with 28k on the clock.
It has multiple problems, but I couldn't pass it up for $300 with a good title.   8)

Pretty cute scooters.     How many CCs are those ?

Mine is maybe a bit heavier at 1100 pounds, but the 5700 CC engine is a lot of fun.
