I think there are some lessons that can be taken away from this incident. The BG's are on him pretty fast. They had to have been observing him for some time and moved in "when the time was right." He apparently didn't notice them beforehand?
And when it came time to make his move, he did it w/o hesitation. (Probably got inside their OODA loop. :) )

Too bad anyone had to get hurt but at least it wasn't the good guy who was injured.

Fortunately he is a cop in Chicago, the people there are not allowed to protect themselves. If he didn't have a gun, he would have been like all the other people and had to wait for the cops to show up and take a report.
I don't think anyone would have been shot if they just handed over the money and keys, but you never know. At least this time the good guys won.
