The idea of a person openly, and legally, carrying a gun in the same restaurant his family eats in makes Ari Kohen nervous.
“Even if they’re the most careful people in the world, it’s a loaded weapon,” said Kohen, a political science professor with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“I have no idea what might happen. I don’t know what their intentions are. Maybe they’re just out to have a nice dinner like I am, but I can’t read somebody’s mind. And I can’t prevent an accident either.”
That's the kind of attitude Nick Crawford of Nebraska Open Carry wants to change. The group plans to host its third Freedom Carry meetup -- attendees are encouraged to carry their firearms -- Thursday evening at HF Crave, 2801 Pine Lake Road.
Crawford said the group isn’t looking for attention. Rather, he said, its members want a chance to bond and to stand as positive examples of gun ownership.
“I want to show businesses the gun community is important and that we do care when businesses do and don’t allow carry,” Crawford said.

the comments on this story is ridiculous.
-
Oh really! Dopes? Care to explain that remark?
-
Nebraska and left leaning cities like Lincoln & Omaha don't have a ban on open carry, that is why these highly publicized events like these remind the powers that be, that we need to ban open carry and raise the training for CHP.
If your going to open carry your handgun just DO IT!!! Don't put it in the paper. This is publicity we don't need.
-
Nothing to explain .... they just seem like they need a hug .... I know your position Gunscribe and agree with most of it. I do not agree with the "hear ye hear ye we are gathering with our guns at so and so business establishment". Get your buddies, strap your smoke wagons on and go out and eat.....quit making a production out of it ......
-
Gunscribe and others are successfully swaying my opinion on this quite a bit, but I'm still really curious about a couple things.
1. How supportive was HF Crave about hosting this? Are they gung ho about open carry and want the event with political overtones to occur on their property? If so, great and I will eat there even more. If not, then it seems risky that they'll get drawn into a political fight that they weren't spoiling for.
2. Who keeps calling the liberal media ahead of the event and giving the JLS time to contact some impotent hand-wringing poli sci professor in advance? It would be much better if the LJS found out about it AFTER the event already occurred so they don't have time to go hunt down some hand-wringers for quotes in order to report it as a "controversy" when it wasn't.
-
Not to speak for anyone else, just what I have read. I dont believe anyone sponsoring, coming to, or attending the event ever wanted to make a production out of it.
No different than the monthly NFOA breakfast, except none of the bed wetters have found the NFOA facebook page to get alerted to freak out when we have breakfast at HiWay Diner.
My understanding was that a NOC member contacted HF Crave and asked them if they would be open to having members come for dinner. HF Crave said Thursday nights are slow and that would be a good time for us to have your members dine in our resturant.
I dont think it was the intention of any NOC member to alert the media to what was designed to be a simple evening out for dinner with friends.

"“They can dress it up all they want, but the fact of the matter is if someone drops a gun and a bullet goes into a 12-year-girl’s lung it is too late for their warm and fuzzy feelings,” said Gailey of Lincoln."
my triggers aren't that light..... are yours?

I dont think it was the intention of any NOC member to alert the media to what was designed to be a simple evening out for dinner with friends.
I kinda have to think it was either someone's intent or they have a mole in their midst.
-
I notice a couple things in the story, I often wear black clothing. Johnny Cash or Roy Orbison inspired? Maybe. Also, an open carry event and no rifles? Is that organizers doing or at the request of the establishment?
-
I kinda have to think it was either someone's intent or they have a mole in their midst.
I followed the link to some of their facebook "friends", and it appears that several of the loudest protesters against this dinner are both "friends" of NOC, AND Moms demand action, Nebraskans for peace, Nebraskans against gun violence, etc.
Yes, there appears to be a mole, but it is an "anti" that saw the announcement among NOC friends and went "public" with it. Several of the people commenting that they will NEVER patronize HF Crave are not even Nebraska residents...

Typical liberal tactic; when you can not articulate or defend your emotional position with common sense and facts you resort to name calling.
Okay, I'm a dope.
I really am trying to understand your point of view. I just can't seem to get my head that far up my ass!

I guess someone didn't agree with your point of view, so you turned to slander and name calling. NICE!
-
Bob, What part of; He called me a DOPE and said there is no need to explain DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND?
I simply stated the truth - it is a liberal tactic
What name did I call him?
I admitted that I am a Dope and informed him that try as hard as I could I can't understand his position.
What part of my post is slander?
Please explain because as I have previously stated my Cranial/rectal inversion skills are lacking.

Sorry. We need to remember that we are all on the same side. I wish this whole OC vs. CC rift could just go away.
I mean no disrespect, yet another point of view.

Sorry. We need to remember that we are all on the same side. I wish this whole OC vs. CC rift could just go away.
I mean no disrespect, yet another point of view.
As long as the anti OC folks (read those that don't FULLY support the 2nd amendment) keep thinking the way they do this will never go away. Seems the anti OC folks are OK with arbitrarily interpreting the 2nd amendment, not following it's indisputable meaning. That is the same reason why I absolutely despise the Negotiating Rights Away organization that I am strong armed into supporting so I can be a member of my range.
-
Differing points of view are essential for fleshing out what will be presented as the public face of the NFOA.
The problem is when some of us take the grabbers position and demean their fellow gun owners. That is what they (grabbers) are working to do and we play right into their hands. This is the one issue they work the hardest at in dividing and conquering.
During the time I spent working to get concealed carry in Nebraska the grabbers kept reminding us that we didn't need it because open carry was and still is legal.
"Why do you need to conceal a gun, only thugs hide their guns, open carry is legal, strap it on and wear it so we can all see it."
The tactic was to keep concealed carry from passing. Then when more and more people open carried they could work to ban that as well.
Now that we have concealed carry the grabbers have reversed their tactic. They are bad mouthing it to get it made illegal because we have concealed carry. If they succeed their next step will be to further restrict or rescind concealed carry.
Never ever forget their ultimate goal is a total ban on private firearms ownership.
Everything they do is to that end one small step at a time and when one of us starts making their case for them they say "Look, see even gun owners support this or that law."
-
I do believe the Dope comment in this case was way over the line, that being said I think their OC get together would of been a win if it was kept out of the media. The media exposure rallies the opposition and hurts the business that they meet at.
We as gun owners need to patronize business that support carrying, no matter how you chose to do it.

hurts the business that they meet at.
Don't tell that to Shooters Grill in Rifle, CO. Their business is BOOMING (pun intended) and they advertise that they support open carry in their place of business.
And that from the land of Kalifornia 2.0.
-
The media exposure rallies the opposition and hurts the business that they meet at.
Maybe but only in the very short term if it does at all. In many other states routinely having open carry get togethers raised awareness and quickly became the norm when the general public came to realize what a non-issue it really is.
The more it happens the less the average citizen of local media pays attention to it. Because it rarely happens it sells newspapers. When it is a daily occurrence in a short time nobody cares.
We as gun owners need to patronize business that support carrying, no matter how you chose to do it.
Absolutely! Comment on their webpage, Facebook Page etc.. what a good time you had there how delicious the food was and how good the service was. And let them know you are a member of the NFOA. Hell if you find a place post it here and we can all stop in and eat or buy is we get a chance.
Call and speak to the manager praising individual employees by name.

It could still be a win if HF Crave has more business than they know what to do with, tomorrow night, regardless of OC preferences. I'm going to try to make it or at least get some takeaway. Anyone else?
Crave's facebook page is being slathered with all sorts of pansy-a** comments.

I'm in..... I will be the guy carrying concealed..... ;)

Push back on their Facebook page, call them and thank them for their support and be a good tipper! Impressing the wait staff gets you welcomed back.

I went today - concealed. Made it a point to tell both the cook (bald, full tats badass) that I appreciated them not caving, not listening to the 3% of the population that wets it panties at the thought of a gun. Told him I drove across town today just to spend money with them and let them know that the support may not yell and scream on facebook, but we are many, we have money to spend, and we will spend it at HF Crave.
On the way out, said the exact same thing to the bearded guy (manager)? and let him know that just because he doesnt hear the positives as much as he hears the negative to know that he is doing the right thing. Shook his hand and said thank you.
Both replied that they had received some off the wall phone calls, but that they were not going to cave in and stop the open carry event.
Go "like" their FB page. Dont get into any hairy discussions with the bed wetters. Go tonight or tomorrow for lunch and get a burger. Come tomorrow night and spend some money.
VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET AND LET HF CRAVE KNOW YOU SUPPORT THEM!
We finally have a business that is not caving in to the lefty loonies - and wether you support OC or CC - WE are all firearm owners and HF Crave needs our support.

And if you are ever back in Lincoln, you need to try one of their burgers. Naturally raised, hormone free beef. You can build your own burger, or order one of their "Signature Burgers". One of my favorites is the PB&B, or Peanut Butter & Bacon. YES...I said PEANUT BUTTER. They aren't cheap, but they are SOOO good.

Just a thought,
Maybe, since you guys from Lincoln can't seem to get your monthly breakfast meet and greet going, try a weeknight burger fest.
Just a thought.

Problem with that doug, is that there are already so many things going on that weren't when Jeremy and I started talking about a lincoln meet. And then people *****ed about not having one in Lincoln, so we had a couple, and what do you know, they didn't show.
Honestly, I've been so damn busy between work and school and personal issues that I am surprised someone else hasn't stepped up and taken over the Lincoln side of it.

I got here just a little after 6:00PM and the line was almost to the door. It has slowed down, but people are still trickling in.

I came home from work and the missus had cooked a big fancy meal.... Doh! So after dinner I went down for a soda and a healthy "keep the change" to thank them. I just got back now and there were still probably 25+ people there (a lot for that place) and yes they said it had been crazy earlier and the line had been out the door.

Fly will incur a 20 sec FTDR at the next IDPA event he attends....and they no longer make the orange vest....it is a limited edition. Glad all went well. Wonder if Chief Peshong had any of his boys and girls trolling the parking lot

That Garthright guy thinks a lot of himself. Amazing how a person can imagine themself atop the intellectual mountain and pronounce all who disagree with him "morons." What magical, mystical intellectual powers! :)
Naturally, his predictions sound much like what we heard when CCW was being debated and we all know how that turned out. Where's the murder n' mayhem we were promised?

That's the gentleman I responded to.
Essentially, I asked him how he could classify a Military Veteran, Veteran EMT and FireFighter, and a College Graduate working on a second degree a "moron".
I'm kind of curious how he will respond, if he does at all...

Can't seem to get my responses to stick either. I've written two now.

There are still only 2 comments posted, both negative. I will dine there to help the business that helps us. As far as OC if that's what you wanna do, I am good with it. But myself I don't really feel like having a sign on me that says shoot me first, then rob me. JMO

I guess I don't understand that reasoning. Why would they go after someone armed when 99% of people aren't armed and have their noses glued to their phone?

Well, over the many decades I have found that stupid comes in many forms.

Ok, now they're up. Good guys have a voice too at 10/11 news.

My email to Abby...
Abby,
I just wanted to thank you for your initial story on concealed carry and women. I found it quite interesting that you grew up in a home without firearms, yet decided that you should learn about them, even obtain your concealed handgun permit. This is an intelligent revelation that many who are unfamiliar with guns would dispute. They would argue that you are at more risk just by being anywhere near firearms. However, the truth is that everyone needs firearms safety training at the very least. This includes our children.
I know your current focus is firearms safety and personal protection, but there is so much more to the world of firearms. Being unfamiliar to firearms it may be hard to imagine, but there are a lot of shooting sports that can be quite fun. My midlife crisis has turned into a passion for the action shooting sports. Standing in a lane at the firing range will be challenging for a while, but eventually you will need something to keep you engaged. Action shooting forces you to take your shooting to a new level. A course of fire requires the shooter to move, reload, shoot from various positions, make decisions on the fly, and all this while being under the pressure of a timer.
If action shooting is too much of a leap, there are several other competitions which will challenge you. The monthly Rock Your Glock is held at the Lincoln Izaak Walton League range near Bennet, NE. Note that a Glock is not required to shoot. You can shoot any pistol, revolver, or even .22lr handgun. If you really want to get better, these competitions will be the next step in your progression. If you ever do have to use your firearm in self defense, you will not be able to count on the bad guy to stand still right in front of you.
Even if you don’t want to get involved in shooting sports, there are many great instructors around that teach classes that may be more focused on your interests.
Thanks again for the great story. Shoot safe!
And her reply...
Thank you for your email. I was so glad to be able to feature my ccw permit experience on-camera, and I hope it makes people think about the reality of guns in our society. I REALLY hope I never have to use mine, but I am glad that I am no longer scared at the thought or sight of one - and have learned a great deal in the process. I certainly plan to continue my training.
Thanks, again. Have a great weekend.
What an amazing transformation. Something I wish could occur more often in this day and time.

That was a heck of a first six minutes of TV last night! Two positive, back-to-back stories about firearms, and the station didn't even air any "counterpoint" arguments. The hoplophobes must have been spitting mad.

Impossible! Those guns just fall out of the holsters and shoot 12 year olds in the lungs...

Boy, I dunno. The anti-self-defense experts are claiming Crave will be out of business in six months 'cause of this. :)

The last time I went Deer hunting in Colorado I wore a bright red vest. Walking along the side of a mountain, the ground about 15 feet below me exploded, and a second later I heard a boom! I looked across to the mountain on the other side of the creek and saw a muzzle flash but couldn't see the guy. I don't know where the second bullet hit but I imagine that guy was surprised when the "deer" he was shooting at fired four quick shots a bit the right of where the muzzle flash came from. No more shots fired. I was in the bright side, he was in the dark side. He must have been color blind. I walked down the mountain, crossed the stream and climbed up to the trail he was using. As the birds fly about 300 yards between us. He wasn't there but a .30-40 Krag cartridge was on the ground near where he was standing.
