Title: S&W Model 29 memories

The first pistol I ever shot was a Model 29 in 44 magnum.  My brother Dave bought it because of Dirty Harry.  I was about 14 I think and my brothers and BILs had a good laugh when I fired it and almost lost my entire arm with the recoil. My dad however could handle it and not even flinch. My brother Dave got pretty good with it but never as good as Dad.

I didn't fire another pistol over .22 caliber again until just a few years ago, but I always had a special place in my heart for that Model 29, mostly because of my brother Dave and his love of Dirty Harry and Clint Eastwood.  A feeling we shared even though separated by 10 years in age.

My brother Dave passed away today at the age of 70.  He was a great friend, a wonderful brother and I will miss him very much.

I will always remember him and that Model 29.

Seems like a memorial salute from a battery of S&W M29s would be in order at some appropriate time and place.

Sorry about your loss; may our Savior take your brother into his arms and comfort his survivors.

I have a Smith & Wesson .357 that I bought years ago as a police trade-in.  The barrel is 4".  There is nothing on it that tells me the model number or frame size.  If I wasn't so ignorant about revolvers I'd probably know just by looking but I don't.  So how do I find out those things?

I'm sorry for your loss DenmanShooter.  I'm glad for your Model 29 memories with your brother though.

depserv: newer Smiths (since 1957) should have a model number stamped in the yoke cutout.  You should see it when you open the cylinder.  If it's older than 1957, it should have a model name on it somewhere.

Thanks!  Model 65-3 I guess.  There is a U stamped above that; does that signify anything?  Just curious.
