Title: Questions for ENGC Members
Post by: SeanN on October 20, 2010, 09:09:06 AM
Hi all,

I joined up with the ENGC last night. Very excited to do some shooting out there! I did have a few questions though. Unfortunately, I couldn't stick around to ask members at the meeting since my girlfriend was late for dinner and I had to rush out of there to get her there.

I've read the rules up and down several times to make sure I know them all and I'll be sure to bring my clear chamber indicator but I had a few (semi-stupid) questions.

1. The clear chamber indicator goes inside the chamber obviously. Do I just slide the thin end into the chamber/barrel and let it hang out with the bolt locked back on an AR15?

2. I assume I have to buy or make/print my own targets. Any recommendations where I get some (anyone have a place to download any that I can print off easily?)

3. Are there already target stands at the range or do I have to make/buy one?

4. How do you know when the range is cold to go out and retrieve your old targets and setup new ones? Obviously if there's a range officer present s/he will give the call but what if there isn't a range officer?

Just want to make sure I'm doing everything properly and keep it fun and safe. Worst thing would be to go down there unprepared and not be able to shoot or do something wrong. Thanks for your help all.

"clear chamber indicator", lol, I had to go look that one up.  Never heard of such a thing!

What happened to the range safety officer actually walking the line to see the open and empty chambers?  Have we gotten that lazy?

1. The clear chamber indicator goes inside the chamber obviously. Do I just slide the thin end into the chamber/barrel and let it hang out with the bolt locked back on an AR15?       YES

2. I assume I have to buy or make/print my own targets. Any recommendations where I get some (anyone have a place to download any that I can print off easily?)   YES bring your own targets. I just usually use cheap white paper plates, or if you want to get fancy with shapes, insert shapes and print them from a WORD document.

3. Are there already target stands at the range or do I have to make/buy one?

You will want a portable target stand. Check MidwayUSA.com or search the various forums for good ideas on constructing one for cheap

4. How do you know when the range is cold to go out and retrieve your old targets and setup new ones? Obviously if there's a range officer present s/he will give the call but what if there isn't a range officer?     Just make sure to get a verbal acknowledgment from each shooter on the line that the line is cold/safe before going down range

Just want to make sure I'm doing everything properly and keep it fun and safe. Worst thing would be to go down there unprepared and not be able to shoot or do something wrong. Thanks for your help all.

I just look online for ones that are on sale when I buy other stuff at places like Midway. Buy them in bulk they are much cheaper.

Not a lot. I suggest bringing your own.

Like mentioned above, just get confirmation from everyone else. It's usually not very crowded if it's not a weekend morning and you're not on the 100yd range though.

Just remember to bring everything you need with you. It's a long drive back to town for the ammunition you forgot  ;)

The only thing I can add is that since it is election season those yard signs, the plastic ones with wire stands, make great target stands.

I don't think I've ever used my clear chamber indicator at the ENGC.  I'll probably get in trouble now but no one has bothered me about one yet.

2. I assume I have to buy or make/print my own targets. Any recommendations where I get some (anyone have a place to download any that I can print off easily?)  There are several sites from which you can download and print your own targets.  mytargets.com and targetz.com come to mind right off the top of my head.  I also like to purchase targets from letargets.com.

3. Are there already target stands at the range or do I have to make/buy one?  You will need target stands.  I made my own out of 1.5" PVC pipe (for the base) and furring strips for the uprights.  You can staple a target backer to the uprights and your targets to the target backer.

4. How do you know when the range is cold to go out and retrieve your old targets and setup new ones? Obviously if there's a range officer present s/he will give the call but what if there isn't a range officer?  This has not been an issue for me.  There's usually a range officer on the rifle ranges to call the cease fire.  I don't think I've ever had to share a pistol range with anyone.

Just want to make sure I'm doing everything properly and keep it fun and safe. Worst thing would be to go down there unprepared and not be able to shoot or do something wrong. Thanks for your help all.

Oh, I can't believe I forgot this site: http://www.zombietargets.net/.  Just remember, though, only head shots count!

Thanks so much for the info!

One last stupid question: I assume there are benches there. I should probably buy some form of shooting bag or bench rest so I can actually shoot off of them effectively right? Otherwise I'd just kind of be holding the rifle which wouldn't be quite as accurate, I'm sure.

Thanks again. Hopefully I'll see some of you out there. I'm likely the guy that only has AR15s...  :P

Sean, that's not a stupid question.  I tell you what, you come to an Appleseed and we'll teach you how to accurately shoot standing, sitting, and prone.  By the end of the weekend, you'll be agreeing that a solid prone position feels more stable than a bench (and certainly is more versatile)  ;D. There's an Appleseed in Grand Island this weekend and one in Lincoln on November 20/21.  Check out this thread if you're interested: http://www.nebraskafirepower.com/forum/index.php?topic=2629.
