Thanks Gary!

What is the source of the information, I went to the Miss. State website and there is nothing on it saying they are honoring our permits...
-
I just called the Miss. Highway Patrol, CCW permit section and they told me that they have not been informed of any changes and Nebraska permits are not honored....
-
It is not posted here either, so I would not carry there on a NE permit yet. They do recognize Utah and Florida though.

I will contact the admin at handgunlaw.us about this issue. The OP, Gary Slider, owns that site

Thanks Dan, it's to easy to get in trouble these days, so I try to verify personally which states I travel to honor our permits...

Believe me, nobody want this right more than Gary Slider

Well ****. I just got back from a trip to New Orleans and Texas. On the way down we took an extra hour just to avoid going through Mississippi.

Is the bill passed and signed by the Governor on April 17th of this year. Read the bill. The honoring all other states permit/licenses is at the end of the bill and the go date for this law is July 1, 2012

I don't see it. It appears that the underlined section is the change. That change authorizes them to enter into agreements for reciprocity. That's good. However, it does not establish any reciprocity. I just authorizes the state to enter into those agreements.
It's a good step forward in getting the two states together.

Here is how the old law read. They changed the Signed agreements area as that is all they had to change to make sure MS could sign agreements if needed for the other state to honor them. You can see how the changed the wording so the first was separated from the second part to make it stand alone.
(19) Any person holding a valid unrevoked and unexpired license to carry stun guns, concealed pistols or revolvers issued in another state shall have such license recognized by this state to carry stun guns, concealed pistols or revolvers, provided that the issuing state authorizes license holders from this state to carry stun guns, concealed pistols or revolvers in such issuing state and the appropriate authority has communicated that fact to the Department of Public Safety.
New Version
(19) Any person holding a valid unrevoked and unexpired 329 license to carry stun guns, concealed pistols or revolvers issued 330 in another state shall have such license recognized by this state 331 to carry stun guns, concealed pistols or revolvers. The 332 Department of Public Safety is authorized to enter into a 333 reciprocal agreement with another state if that state requires a 334 written agreement in order to recognize licenses to carry stun 335 guns, concealed pistols or revolvers issued by this state.
-
My reading of this statute is Mississippi recognizes all states permits, and if another state requires a reciprocal agreement so Mississippi permits can be honored in that state the Department of Public Safety is authorized to do so.
Note: I am not a Lawyer, especially not one practicing law in Mississippi.
-
Gary, thanks for the clarification, but the scary part still is that the State of Mississipi State Patrol is unaware that the law changed, if your traveling to Miss. I'd carry a copy of this change in the law with you until they update their website...
-
They know. If they don't know they all should be fired. It is their job to know the law especially the handgun unit.
-
so I'm in MS now, is my permit good here?
-
Yes, MS recognizes NE CCW.

Just my opinion but I would say no. The bill was signed a few days ago and becomes law in July. So till it is law I would say if you carry now you are breaking the law. Again just my opinion.

Wasn't this signed last year (2012)? So it would have gone into effect in July of 2012?

cool thanks guys I read all the posts and documents but like someone else said its not even showing reciprocity on both states websites.
-
Nebraska does not honor Mississippi permits, guess it's not good enough for Nebraska. Thank you MS for being more believing in law abiding citizens than my own home state is.
-
I just did some research on Mississippi, since my son is stationed there currently, just turned 21, and wants to get his first CCW.
A MS resident can walk in, fill out and application, pay $100 and get a CCW there. NO TRAINING REQUIRED...... Which is why Nebraska will not honor Mississippi.
Now the cool part about MS, that I've tried to get some Senators to do something similar here in NE........ If you go through a MS approved CCW course, you get a "endorsement" on your permit. Having that endorsement on your permit means that all of the off limits places, ARE NO LONGER OFF LIMITS TO YOU. Except Police stations and jails.

I'm so embarrassed.
Don't feel bad. I've eaten that egg too. We all have, at one time or another.
