Title: Rather inventive use of $10...
Post by: gsd on October 25, 2012, 04:20:00 PM
I decided to modify an old wooden cabinet to house all my assorted firearms, at least those that weren't lost in that tragic boating accident ;D

While trying to figure out a way to organize the top shelf, i came up with what i thought was a novel idea...

Empty shelf with non slip rubber matting,

Add two desktop letter organizers,
(http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u156/topdownbimmer/2012-10-25_15-45-33_806.jpg)

And voila, you have a handgun organizer. Skip a section in between each firearm, and you have a spot for your spare mags as well.

The other side is kinda slick too. If you have PMags, insert them in dust cover first, and you have a 5 mag organizer. Works fine with steel mags either way, but you have to use the dust cover first on the PMags due to the wider base plate.

And if you get even a bit craftier, you can cut a thin piece of Lexan or wood to the right dimensions, and add yet another shelf.

Total Cost: $9.18

Just thought I would share a neat little thought I had with y'all.

You still have guns? I listened to the Violence Policy Center (with their federal sounding name) and turned in all my firearms to LPD so I wouldn't hurt myself with them from my own confusion.

Looks like you did pretty good on a budget.

My first gun cabinet was a $20 particle wood 'closet'. Since then I added shelves, now housing hunting clothes and accessories.
(P.S. If I can find another cabinet, I'll sell you back that green cabinet.)

Nice.  Creative solutions are the best. :)

Turned out nice. I like the uniformity in the spacing.  Is there still room for long guns in the bottom? (I think I see one down there)

Gunner...yes, my 1891 Argy Mauser and my AR are hanging out down there. If i were to figure out a rack system i'm betting i could get 5 or 6 down there.

I'm thinking of doing something for long guns.  I have a few extra that don't fit in the safe, and I would like to build a locking rack that I can bolt to the basement wall.  It wouldn't be as secure as a safe, but better than nothing.  One more thing to add to the list of winter projects.

While I admire creative recycling projects, I would suggest spending $100 or so to at least get a cheap metal cabinet with a lock on it.
