Title: Biometric gun safe
Post by: Maverick on December 30, 2012, 07:25:02 PM
Anyone have any experience with biometric gun safes?  There are some very mixed opinions out there.  Any help would be appreciated

Personally ? No.  I don't want any gun safe that requires electricity for me to get into.  Power goes out, batteries go bad, electronics fail, etc.  Gimme a key or combo any day.  Also, what if you cut your finger ? Or similar ?

That said - if you're locking up a home defense weapon for whatever reason that suits you (kids, etc)... I can see a biometric safe being a possible thought.  Still don't like it, personally.

I personally went with the keypad with keyed lock backup.
I'm still a bit leery of the bio myself. I keep thinking back to when I got printed with NSP. My hands tend to be real dry, especially during the winter, and they had to lotion my hands up or maybe had me wash my hands, so that their scanner would pick up my prints.  my $.04  ( New year price increase)

For casual storage it would work fine. Being able to access your weapon in an emergency is different, and I have the same concerns as the other posters.

If you will have to unlock the safe under stress, small key pads and simplex style buttons will be very difficult to operate. The best safe that we have found, and have sold at the shop since we opened, is the GunVault non biometric gun safe. It has the best combination of easy to access buttons and security that we have found.

The only disadvantage would be that the batteries are internal, so you have a key as a backup, and the key needs to be secured elsewere. I change my batteries once a year, and have had my safe for well over 10 years with no issues.

I have a Barska one.  It has a key backup if needed.  Worked everytime I tried to open it.  Got it on Amazon.
