The news spin makes it sound like any Joe can make the shots. That thing is specific to the round, load velocity, etc. Most of us know that unless the guy can duplicate the rounds, he still isn't going to hit the gong at a 1000 yards. While it is high on the cool factor, it is still a high priced toy for someone who is inexperienced.

And there lies the problem. Unless you can exactly duplicate their ammo the system is useless. Of course, if you can afford the system you can afford to buy their ammo.

Expensive? Nope... it's cheap compared to years of sniper training. 8)
Proprietary ammo? Nope... as precise as your 300gr. 338 Lapua Magnum reloads, for example. 8)
Practical? Nope... requires a move to the Sandhills to take full advantaqge of 2/3rds mile kill zone. :'(

That would make it a great gun for Antelope! :) .... but not very sporting.

The ammo is proprietary unless you can figure out how to exactly duplicate their load. A slight change in velocity or ballistic coefficient can make a big difference in point of impact at 1000 yards. Figuring out the bullet they use is the easy part - then you have to figure out what powder and how much to get the same trajectory.

I suspect that the the software which does the ballistics work, like all such software, has inputs for bullet weight, ballistic coefficient, muzzle velocity, altitude, temperature, humidity and wind direction and speed. With that info entered in the POI is just a matter of the solution of a 2nd Degree differential equation already programmed into the Linux system that controls when the rifle fires, which is when the current POI overlays the set POI.

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the software does not allow for ammunition with different ballistics than what it was designed for.
But like I said, if you can afford the gun you can surely afford their ammo. It's not like you need to burn a whole bunch of it practicing at the range....

You know even with all of the help the systems provides for lining up the shot seeing your target hit after the bullet travels 1000 yards is still going to be pretty darn cool. I don't care who you are.
