Backpacker shoots, kills grizzly in Alaska park

ANCHORAGE, Alaska ? A backpacker shot and killed a grizzly bear with his handgun in Alaska's Denali National Park, officials said.

A man and woman reported that they were hiking Friday evening when the bear emerged from trailside brush and charged the woman, park spokeswoman Kris Fister said in a statement.

The man fired nine rounds from his .45 caliber, semiautomatic pistol at the animal, which then stopped and walked into the brush.

The two reported the shooting to rangers, who restricted access to the Igloo Canyon area for fear that the bear was wounded and dangerous.

On Saturday, rangers found the dead bear about 100 feet from the shooting site.

Park officials are determining the justification for the shooting. It's legal to carry firearms in that area of the park but illegal to discharge them.

Rangers said it was the first known instance of a grizzly bear being shot by a visitor in the wilderness portion of Denali, formerly called Mount McKinley National Park

OK, Let's See If We Can Get This Scenario Laid Out Just Right..........

Ferocious, Growling, Snarling Grizzly Bear Displaying Clearly Malicious Intent Charges Defenseless Woman in the Wilderness.

Guy has Gun, but is NOT Allowed to Shoot It.

Well, then, Just Write Him Up a Big, Fat Ticket and Tell Him Next Time, Call 911.

And the Coroner.  [For the Remaining Few Pieces.]

If the Guy Had Just Kept His Finger Off the Trigger, He Couda Won Some Kinda Special Award From PETA.

Say, "2010 Wild, Wooly Animal-Saviour of the Year".   Or Sumthin'.

Thanx sfg, couldn't put the words together when I posted, just highlited the part that really ticked me off! :angry9:

Of course you did forget to mention that the bear family's PETA backed attorney will probably bring up the excessive use of force as he did 'pump' 9 rounds of .45 caliber into the bear. And who's to say it wasn't premeditated as the 'killer' carried a loaded semi-automatic pistol into an area with such restrictions. (sarcasm doesn't post well huh?)

Too bad for this fella that Palin stepped down as Governor, she would probably give him an award and a bear rug!  ;D
