Just went to the Lincoln gun show for something to do. I really need to stay away from the tables that have lots of glass topped display boxes full of "old stuff". Like old tang sights. Any way found this rare gem. A totally functional Lyman peep made for the Remington Model 81 auto rifle. Could not pass that up. Now all it needs is a rifle to go with it!

It's only bad if either:

1: If you never use it or didn't need it for any reason.
2: It cost more than it was really worth.

Both rules are negated if you have either:

1: More money than you need. AKA more money than sense
2: It is something cool that you just WANT.

I have fallen into 3 of these 4 columns.

These excuses for buying or passing could go on and on, but why bother, just look to see when the next gun show is that you can attend.

I found the perfict add on for the site I scored at the gun show on GB. My second Model 81 should be on the way in a week or so. This one is in .300 Savage and is in need of a nice folding tang site.

The sight looks much bigger in your original picture, it is more in proportion properly mounted.

The rear peep style sight is my only option for shooting or hunting with irons these days. On rifles that have a short sight radius like most lever guns and semi autos the old standard buckhorn and blade is a no go for me. I tried it on this 95 Winchester several years back by just changing the rear to a tang peep sight and leaving the front blade sight as issued and it really worked well for both informal target shooting like working up loads and for use in the hunting field. I was able to see the deer and place the shot to good effect. I use a scope if at all possible but guns like the 95 Winchester and these old Remington autos require nonreversable modifications that I dont like to make. If they come that way fine, other wise the tang sight is the way to go. Thats why I was so excited to find the correct sight for a Model 81 Rem Auto as they are really hard to come by and expincive to boot. Darn near half the cost of the gun. I got the one I found at a true bargan price.

The Fremont gun show last weekend had a nice looking model 81 in .300 Savage for I think $500.  That was the first time I've looked at one up close.  They're nice looking guns.
