OMAHA, Neb. -- Omaha police responded to a shooting near the Hy-Vee grocery store at 78th and Cass streets Monday night.

According to emergency dispatchers, paramedics took a shooting victim away from the scene. The victim, a 26-year-old white male, was pronounced dead.

The incident was reported at 8:50 p.m. Police radio traffic indicated no one was allowed in or out of the store immediately after the shooting.

One witness told KETV NewsWatch 7's Jeremy Maskel that she heard three shots fired outside the store, as she was walking through the parking lot. Once inside the store, she saw a security guard chasing an armed man near the deli.

I wonder if the shooter was aware of the Omaha ordinance requiring that they register their firearm?  If they did not register it, they are going to be in BIG trouble.

More twists and turns, starting to sound like this could have been a self-defense shooting.

Interesting how they describe a possible self defence situation as "vigilantism" ::)

Judging by the story, these two were both fine upstanding citizens.
"It is better to avoid than to run; better to run than to de-escalate; better to de-escalate than to fight; better to fight than to die. The very essence of self-defense is a thin list of things that might get you out alive when you are already screwed." – Rory Miller

Yes, but even people with a "history" have the right to defend themselves.

It seems the shooter was not a prohibited person.

I thought about starting a new thread, but the chronology is better served here.http://www.omaha.com/article/20120309/NEWS97/120309636
I'm glad to see a jury has a compassionate nature for a father. I'm inclined to believe the prosecution wasn't thrilled at the prospect of making the dead ex-boyfriend of the daughter a sympathetic character. That they didn't push the unregistered weapon aspect makes me think there weren't many to mourn his passing and that Mr. Anderson is a stand up guy.

Its also odd to note that he wasn't charged with any gun violations. This case does sound a little fishy, but the dead guy was a real dirt bag and likely deserved what he got.

+1 for the people

There is a lot of fishy here, but the biggest thing that I find interesting is the displayed ineptness of the prosecution, it's almost like they tried to loose.  There are a lot of questions that the prosecution put forth but offered no defendable answers, it's just strange.

To a large degree, yes.
