25 meter rimfire match
« on: November 26, 2011, 03:22:32 PM »
We did a "mini" CMP match this morning in Lincoln, with .22's and reduced size targets at 25 meters and it was a lot of fun.  I'm wondering if anyone in the Lincoln area would be interested in something like this as a regular event?  I'm thinking something similar to the Appleseed course of fire, but maybe with less restrictive time constraints to make it easier for the bolt action and tube fed guys to compete.  I would probably allow both scopes and iron sights but have them compete in separate classes.

My ultimate goal would be to have something that kids could compete in, but still be fun for adults.  Ideally we could have both junior and adult classes, if enough people participated.  I'm kind of just throwing it out for suggestions right now, but if there's enough interest I might talk to the board of directors at the Lincoln Ikes range about setting up something like this next summer.

Sounds like fun.  My son and I might be interested in that.  It would be a good chance for me to finally meet some people if I don't have a mess of people or wife asking me to do things for them.

I think this is a great idea Brian.  I shot a bolt gun today and got most of my shots off and still placed 2nd, absolute fun despite the wind.  I am looking forward to the next shoot in December.

Sounds like there is some interest.  If anyone wants to brave the weather there will be another one on Dec 31.

Dec 31 is not likely to work for me because of family commitments and guests in for the Holidays

This sounds like a lot of fun.  It's a good excuse to get out the old Marlin.  Not sure about the Dec. 31st date though, busy week with the holidays.

Just to clarify, the match on Dec 31 is the standard scheduled CMP match, but done at 25 meters on reduced size targets.  Centerpiece and rimfire are both welcome.

I think what I will look into doing for next year is 3 positions - 10 rounds offhand on a target scaled for 200 yards, 10 rounds seated on a smaller target, and 20 rounds prone on the smallest target.  Do you guys think 30 seconds per shot is sufficient for bolt action and tube fed guys?  That would mean 5 minutes each for the first two rounds and 10 for the lasr one.  Just for comparison, in both Appleseed and CMP several stages are 10 rounds in less than a minute.  I want to give the kid with an old tube fed bolt gun a chance, but still move fast enough to shoot multiple relays if needed.

Alas, I am working that day.  Would be fun to take my grandfathers Remmington model 34 out there and plink away with it for a while.  It rarely makes it out of the safe anymore unless I am bringing the kids along to the range.

This is my new rimfire gun for the up coming CMP matches.

Ruger 10/22 standard/w upgrades and extras!

For those who don't know it has Tech Sites.

Tuned trigger group and a Tactical Solutions mag release.

Older Power Custom titanium bolt handle.

Some added traction on the stock and butt plate.

I did rework the bolt by pinning the firing pin, chamfering the rear of the bolt, and reducing the headspace to .043".

Brian, I'm looking your way on the 31st, bring your a-game buddy!

Sweet....mine has a chamfered bolt and a trigger job but i never got around to reducing the headspace.  The Green Mountain barrel sure shoots nice though.  The 10/22 is the AR15 of the rimfire world.  I hope I can make it on the 31st but now it's looking like I may be out of town.

Ok, everyone.  We have the go ahead to hold this match.  We're working on dates, so once we have that finalized I'll start a new thread with all the details.  We're going to use the CMP rimfire sporter rules, which is a total of 60 shots from 25 and 50 yards, standing, sitting, and prone.

But the great thing is, you can go buy a $150 Savage or Marlin and have a rifle capable of winning.  A couple of weeks ago Scheels had a Marlin 795 on the used rack that looked almost new for $99.  I will probably pick up one at some point.
