I have started tossing around the idea of putting a red dot sight on my 500 magnum. I was originally going to get a Leupold 4x28 scope on it, but the lack of a field of view on handgun scopes is a turn off for me and I'm not sure if that's what I want. Does anybody know of a brand of red dot that is able to withstand substantial recoil? I have been looking at EOTechs but cannot find what they are rated for, I assume they can't withstand this kind of recoil since they are geared towards AR's. It will be used for hunting, most likely out to 50 or 75 yards but if I can get enough practice I may go for a shot up to 100 yards if I feel 100% confident.

Both Eotech and Aimpoint will be able to take it (IIRC the coast guard's HITRON uses Eotech on their .50 Barretts for destroying outboard motors)

I'm sure there are plenty of other quality options, among which is the Burris FastFire as previously mentioned

Um, you are hoping on taking 100 yard shots with a handgun, but "lack of field of view" is an issue?

:)  I'm not sure I understand the problem.  Most non-magnified dots on handguns give quick acquisition at medium and long range (meaning up to 50 yards or so ---ish) but if you are hunting and want precision shots, I'd think the 4x magnification would be a serious plus at distance.

It is true that you can make shots like that with a simple dot---but a 4x magnification will make it a lot easier.

YMMV, of course.

If I had a solid rest and a dot that was 1 or 2 moa then a 100 yard shot would be reasonable. But chances are I will wait for close up shots and a close up shot with a handgun scope would be a bunch of hair and no idea what I'm aiming at. Chances of a 100 yard shot if I use a holo/red dot wold be slim, I will take the hand cannon into the woods where I wouldn't have far shots and would be apt to bow hunt.

Go with the red dot, I like the idea of the closer shots being easier. Shoot, if you decided you want a more magnified one, then get one and use your EOTECH or Aimpoint and put it on the AR.

Actually after looking through that 2x scope at AJ's guns the other day I may have reverted back to scopes. Reticle doesn't bounce all over, cheaper than nice red dots, and a 2x Nikon Force XR has good 20+ feet in the field of view at 100 yards
