Although there is no pre-requisite for Skillbuilder clinics, I do advise that these clinics are NOT for entry level shooters. You need to be reasonably experienced, and, above all, SAFE with your weapon(s) if you wish to participate in these training opportunities.

For this skillbuilder, you need to be prepared for the following:
-1-3 MOA Targets from 100-900 yards under field conditions
-Improvised positions

I will take a class with you this year.
It is highly likely the above post may offend you. I'm fine with that.

Just a couple notes:

1. Marksman and Precision courses are only available in the spring and fall, when no crops are in, so these likely won't be rolling back around until fall (IF I have time, what with SAPPRC going on).

2. The Marksman Rifle course listed above includes a few hours of online directed studies. Nothing super difficult, but fairly integral to getting the most out of the course.

There will be later this spring/summer, but for now I am taking advantage of the lack of money-producing-plants on the field where we can get to 900 yards.

Still openings for both of these.

For the PR Skillbuilder, I need at least 4 students to make it worthwhile.

as a person who has only shot to 200 yards, 900 yards just sounds ridiculous and fun!
I don't think my equipment is very well suited to that, i don't even have a bolt gun, I have a levergun, 338MX.  I'd be lobbing blind shots like nobodies business to get it to 900 yards since my holdover would exceed the veritcal field of view in my scope

I'm glad I joined NFOA because I didn't know stuff like this went on around here. Someday I'll have the right set up and will join you guys.

What type of rifles are you guys using to get out to those ranges?

Most common is bolt action 308, although 260 and 6mm are what has been winning PRS matches. The rifle actually isn't the star of the show at those ranges, the optic is. Clear glass with open turrets that track correctly, adjustable parallax control, and a scope level.

And of course, the shooter has to know what he is doing :)

Dang it, I was fine up until that last line.

That's why you should attend the class, so I won't be the only one there who doesn't know what he's doing.

I'd really like to---but that is the only weekend day in all of March that I have off.  I'm planning on seeing if this "sleeping in" thing I've heard about is a myth or not...

Just a bump and an honest heads up: The Marksman Rifle class is currently on the chopping block due to apparent lack of interest (despite the 7+ requests I've had for it that caused me to put it on the schedule)

If it is cancelled, then the Carbine Skillbuilder on the 15th, that has also had alot of inquiries, should be GTG.

Edit: Corrected the date.

How about that wind today?

Come on out to the Precision Rifle Skillbuilder to join in the fun :)

The Marksman Rifle class has been cancelled, and registration has been opened for the Carbine Skillbuilder. The carbine class has already hit its minimum number (I quietly opened registration yesterday), so if you want to be sure to get in, I'd be clicking the link below:

Well, that was a lot of fun.  Even without John's guidance it would have been a good time, but having someone who knows what they're doing be there to offer tips is really helpful (note to self:  use your scope level, you idiot!).

Today got extremely windy, so much that at times it was actually hard to hold a steady position.  We did the longer range stuff (out to 888 yards) before the wind picked up too much, but there was still about a 15 mph crosswind so it was still challenging and required the attendees to know their dope and be able to correct for the wind.  3.5 mils of hold off at almost 900 yards is a LOT.  It's so much that you're wondering in the back of your mind if it's going to be anywhere near the target, but you have to have good dope and trust it, and be ready to correct if you miss the first shot.  Hitting steel at that distance is just an awesome experience.

I came away with some stuff that I need to work on, but overall I was happy with how I shot and how my gear performed.  If anyone wants to try their hand at long range precision shooting I would highly recommend attending the next one of these.
