Is The Ammo Shortage Nearly Over?

In south 27th street Walmart this evening, walking past the ammo display, I was surprised to see, everything, except .22LR.

They had so much .40 S&W they could not display all of it.    I did not notice anything missing except .22LR.

I picked up a 250 pack of .40 S&W, so I can train for an up coming class.   $92.  They had the same value pack in 9mm for $20 less. 

Nice to see ammo again.  Would be nice to see the prices the way they were before we elected the unconstitutional president from Kenya.

Yes it is looking much better, BUT don't be deceived that due to someone raising a stink, all the stores in Lincoln were made aware of an old ordinance requiring ALL ammo be stored behind locks or inaccessible to the public.  Thus Wal-Mart's have stuffed all their shot shells with the cartridge ammo!

yea, that ordinance is a joke.  maybe the NFOA could testify at a local hearing about it and get Scheels or Walmart managers to explain how much a of a nuisance it is.... its hindering them from selling product, meaning lower sales and tax income, not to mention having to buy and maintain locking cabinets for all ammo.

I'm Game. But seriously, I don't think the powers that be in this town care about nuisance, or the selling of product, etc.  The taxes thing MIGHT catch their attention. The main thing is the ordinance is simply outdated.  IMHO

As NRA firearm instructors, and we have a few on this forum, do we teach people to keep ammo locked up when being stored?   How is having a store with 20,000 people through it in one day, any safer than your home where only family,  friends, and a statistical burglar once in a lifetime?

I ran a gun store many years, and I kept ammo behind glass without being told to by an ordnance,  because it was a safe way to do business. 

You walk around Wal-Mart twenty minutes and you will find a discarded package where someone stole an item, layed the package down, and walked out.  I see this often times, maybe because I own a store, and I am aware of theft problems.  Do we want people stealing ammo in Wal-Mart, or scheels, or anywhere?

Last evening a homeowner came home to a burglar in his home at 148th and Adams? ??   The thief was wearing the homeowners clothes.   

Ammo needs to be locked up at home, and in stores.  Just common sense.  IMHO.

Regarding unlocked ammo:  One of the big problems is the inconsistency that these rules were being applied.  I know of at least one local gun shop that was approached and told that they needed to change the way they displayed ammo, while Scheel's apparently had not been told to do the same. 

Regarding the ammo shortage:  Attached is a photo of what I saw at WallyWorld a few weeks ago.  Definitely not the bare shelves that I have seen in the past.  Still no 9mm, but lots of other pistol and rifle calibers available.

  .223/5.56 same thing both places
  .380  same thing both places
  .40 same thing both places
  Guns Unlimited appeared to have fairly full selection

Was at Cabela's in La Vista yesterday, and they had all the 22 ammo inside the optics area.  A salesman would hand the box to ya.  Asked why, and they said that people were stashing them throughout the store then going back and getting them later.  This way the ammo last a lot longer.

The reason .22lr is still so high is because it is still scarce.  It appears to me that the 9mm is being offered close to what it was pre-panic.  Palmetto State Armory has been selling 9mm 115 gr at some pretty good prices.

Today I purchased a 300 rd. box of 22lr. cci for $19.95 at Wally World, limit one box per customer. It wasn't that long ago the shelves were packed with boxes of 500 rds. for around $5.00.

500 rounds for $5.00?!    I don't think I ever found that price.  I bought several 500 round boxes for around $13.00 at WallyWorld and Scheels.

When I was a kid I used to buy it for $5.00/500 as the S&S store where my mom worked (precursor of Bomgars for you small town folks).  Plus I got at 10% discount.

I have never bought 22lr that cheap from walmart.... cheapest is golden bullets for 9.99 per 225 and Federal bulk for 23ish. I'm not old enough for the 5 for a penny.

Maybe I'm older than I think or it was around 10 dollars for 500 rds, probably the latter.

What I've noticed is all ammo around here is back to normal except 22lr, 22mag and the 17cal rounds.

Most around here say it's in short supply because some are buying it up for reselling at a profit.

I am pretty sure I have a bulk (500 rounds?) of Federal .22lr that is marked $12.95 from Walmart before the (most recent) panic.

If the ammo is on a shelf, I pick it up and take it to the cash register. If the ammo is locked up, a salesperson hands it to me and I take it to the cash register.....either way, it is in my hands.

edit: Locked up, it may shield access from minors otherwise not allowed to purchase or otherwise handle ammunition in a store.

I think it's too soon to say whether the shortage is getting better. There have always been good and bad weeks throughout this shortage, and I think last week was pretty good. Yes, Cabelas LaVista had lots of .22 on hand Friday but I passed it by.

Still a long way to go though. Being able to buy "some" ammo is way different than having the full selection we used to. If there's some specific factory load you absolutely must have, especially something kind of obscure or exotic, finding that particular load is still pretty much impossible.
