Dear Mr. X:

Thank you for taking time to contact our office with your concerns regarding the proposal by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to ban M855 ammunition.

As you may know, Attorney General Peterson, along with 22 other state attorneys general, sent a letter to the ATF urging the agency to permanently discard the proposed ban. He chose to sign onto this letter because it becomes very concerning when the federal government decides to unilaterally take steps to intentionally control the supply of ammunition.

As Chief Law Enforcement Officer, Attorney General Peterson wants to do the utmost to ensure that our brave men and women, who serve in law enforcement, are safe. This proposed ban does not advance that goal.  Furthermore, the federal government has made no attempt to communicate with local law-enforcement officials to express the basis or need for this action, which would suggest that there is no real public safety threat. Such isolated actions by the federal government, without an actual threat to public safety, constitute federal action that infringes on all citizens’ Second Amendment rights.

Again, thank you for your interest and concern in contacting our office. We appreciate you providing us with your thoughts regarding this issue.

Sincerely,

             JB
