Help I don't know whats going on here

I have dimples showing up. I'm using lee full length sizing die, these are 5.56 lc. I've cleaned them, lubed them, not happening on all of them. Have taken the die apart, cleaned.

As ghknives said - too much lube.

The lube will form little pockets / bubbles as it's being pressed through the die if you have it too thick.  Brass will easily deform compared to trying to static compressed a dense liquid like lube.

If you ever do some wildcat'ing or cartridge conversion - you'll find yourself wiping off lube every couple of strokes just to avoid them dimples / "pitting".


addition:  having run 30, you're now building up lube within the die itself as well

As long as the lube dents don't interfere with chambering they are OK to shoot and the dents will pop back out

These are all range pickups, I figured I would learn to reload with these before I reload something that cost me money.

Inspect your brass for cracks and signs of head separation.  Especially free range organic brass .

Otherwise, feel free to reload it.  Give it a new life \o/ .  Ask questions - we got a range of experienced friendly folks around here. Welcome to reloading life!

What kind of lube are you using?  Not a Hornady salesman but I like to use Hornady One Shot Case Lube.  It is aerosol and it only takes a little to a batch.  Spray it on, shake them around and go to loading.  I don't know any way to get too much on unless you dowse them with the whole can.

I ruined a damn near brand new set of dies by using too little lube when I started out. I now have it just about figured out.

I switched to bootleg dillon lube. Havent ran  bottle neck yet but wow it is smooth on pistol  brass...

4 oz of lanolin and 24oz of red heet.

Three Things a Real Gun Guy Never Does TWICE:

1)  Catch his magazine follower releasing thumb with an M1 Rifle bolt [The Ol' M1 Thumb" Caper].

2)  Catch his Very Personal Member in his pants zipper fly.

3)  Have a Stuck Cartridge Case in his resizing die   [Tends to happen moreso with expensive custom dies where you had to send away and wait six months and pay the equivalent of a mortgage payment:   .323 Jarrett, for example.)

Unfortunately, did 'em all.   Once.   Wuntz.   And ONLY Wuntz.
