Firearms insurance
« on: June 02, 2015, 01:05:44 PM »
I am the process of switching homeowner policy coverage for the first time in 17 years.  I am finding varying requirements for firearms. Some companies want a simple firearms value estimate for a rider while others want a detailed schedule including serial numbers. Anyone have suggestions for either a good major carrier or a specialty carrier?  Not a big fan of providing detailed information to an agent.

Side note: one agent asked me if I had normal guns or "the kind I see on the news that are used to kill a lot of people and shoot up stores and theaters". She obviously has no chance at my business regardless of the rate she quotes.

Are you active duty military, veteran or related to a vet?  If so, USAA.

Ditto USAA.  They are the best in terms of coverage, price and customer service.

Although I am 30 year USAA member and BIG fan pay attention to the details of the policy.  Most cases, there is limit per firearm and/or entire collection.   I've been insured by "Collectibles Insurance Services, LLC"    www.collectinsure.com  for about 6 years.

They do not require any specifics unless you choose a rider on any individual gun you value over $2K.  I carry about $20,000 in coverage with an annual premium of $137.00

I just opened with Collectibles Insurance. It covers guns, optics, knives and no serial numbers. For 10k, its $71 a year. I know some NFOA members have this. Some ARFCOMers who have transferable M16s use this as well.

When I asked State Farm, they wanted serial numbers and appraisals.

Another vote for www.Collectinsure.com

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

If you are an NRA member, you might look into simply adding more coverage (in addition to the free amount you get) through them.

I went with Farmers because of previous good experiences with them for homeowners, have many items listed (non-firearm as well) along with rough $ value in separate riders. My agent didn't bat an eye.

Funny a question like this should come up as my home was burglarized in April and basically all that was taken was my guns. My HOI provider is IMT out of Des Moines IA and they covered everything except the deductible without question and without prior record of ownership. And (according to my adjuster) no increase in premium.
