I have been collecting rifles for almost 50 years now. I was doing some research on a Remington deer rifle I recently bought and I came across The Remington barrel codes. I read a lot on anything gun related, and am almost embarrassed I just learned of these codes. They go back to 1920 and give the month and year the gun was produced by looking at a 2 or 3 letter code on the left hand side of the barrel just in front of the receiver. www.leeroysrambling.com. This is especially helpful on some Remington rim fires ( model 512 and 550 example ) that did not have serial #'s prior the 68 gun control act.
