1911 work... gunsmiths?
« on: January 07, 2010, 01:53:11 AM »
Hey fellas, I got a SA 1911 G.I. 45. When ever I shoot the thing I get wicked hammer bite pretty much every time due to my high grip. I love shooting it, but I don't shoot it as often as I'd like because of the bite.

So I was looking into some beaver-tails. From what i understand they don't just "drop in" and require some smith work.
Anybody know of a good smith that won't rip me off and do a good job?

Also any beaver-tail and hammer recommendations?

Dude, if you live in NE and need work on a 1911, we have a nationally/internationally renowned gunsmith operation:

http://www.cylinder-slide.com/

If you are looking for a local dude, maybe someone else can help you out.

Cylinder and Slide is very good and very pricey.

Another option would be to look up Travis Frerking in Cortland NE,  just outside of Lincoln

Cool thanks for the tips... yeah I've known of cylinder and slide for a few years now. They are really pricey though.
I've heard they are usually swamped with so much gun work that its hard to get your gun back at a decent time (that's hearsay though...)

But I will look into it, thanks guys!

I have been the Cylinder and Slide route.
Yes it took a while, yes it was expensive,
but well worth the time and expense.

You don't rush quality and it don't come cheap

Don't forget Bob Marvel of Crete. He is a master smith also.

Mike Schlereth in Lincoln has worked on a couple of 1911s for me.  Been pleased with his work and price.

You can always check out the Wilson Combat site and look to see if they have drop in parts for your particular model.  I've used a number of their parts and the most I needed to do was a little file and stone work.  You can buy direct and it's pretty easy to do the work unless you are after a true custom fit.

Some grip safeties drop in without any fitting, depends on what you get and your gun. Bob Marvel moved his shop to Cortland or Hallam, don't remember (www.bobmarvelcustomguns.com). He does great work. Frerking Custom Works in Cortland can do it too. (www.fewguns.com) They run a complete machine shop and can do about anything you want.

Fred Ragle (at Omaha Gun & Machine, 8330 1/2 Western Ave.) tinkers with 1911's a bit.

And to followup on the thread JimP linked - I had a Ruger MkII threaded by Gun & Machine. Fred does good work at a fair price. I have no idea what he knows about working on a 1911, but he seemed honest to me.

Sorry Dan, I have to stand up and shout do not let Travis Ferking work on your gun, he screwed up a simple installation of a Millet rear sight on my Colt 1911 and wouldn't make it right, first time I've ever seen a sight fall on the floor when the tension screws were loosened by Travis.  I should have seen it coming, I asked him to do several things for me which a gunsmith should know how to do and he refused, said he didn't know how.  I had to finally send it to Lonnie at Run-N-Iron, it was a pretty simple fix for a compentent gunsmith.  Travis might be pretty good at screwing parts on AR's and running a lathe, but he's not in the league of Bill Laughridge at Cylinder and Slide, or Lonnie at Run-N-Iron.

Sorry, I was only mentioning that Frerking worked on 1911's based on hearsay... I have never had any work done by him.

I have also heard bad things about Travis via ARFCOM and at area gunshows, but have no personal experience with him.
