400 Corbon vs .45, etc
« on: January 09, 2018, 01:52:35 PM »
Hey guys.  Sorry for the newby type question.  So as I understand it, 400 Corbon is a .45, correct?  So if I have a Glock 45 Model 21, can I shoot the 400 Corbon or I can ONLY shoot .45 ACP?  I am relatively new into pistols and really don't understand how ammo works and can't keep everything straight.  There are so many rules and names and I can't seem to figure out how to understand it all.  Thanks for your help.

You need at least a barrel swap to shoot 400 corbon. It is a 45 case necked down to 40 caliber.

So could I shoot the 400 Corbon through a Glock 40 Model 27?

See why I am so confused.  It is a 400 Corbon which is a 45 but is really a 40.  I don't get it.

Not an expert on this, but my understanding is, it's a 45 case, that is then necked down to hold a 40 caliber bullet.

So, to shoot it, like Mntnman said, you'd need to do a barrel swap on your Glock 21.  The Glock will hold magazines sized for the 45 caliber case, but the original barrel that comes with it isn't appropriate for the 40 caliber bullet that you're asking about shooting.  Not sure if you could take the Glock 27 barrel (40 caliber(?)) and use it in the Glock 21.

Edit: Found a picture on the internet.

The middle round is 400 corbon, the right one is a 45.  Does that help explain it?

So I cannot shoot a 400 Corbon through a Glock 40, but could only shoot it through a Glock 45 if I had a modified barrel?  What is the point of the 400 Corbon then?

It is a different caliber. It is not compatible with any Glock. You can get a 400 Corbon barrel for your Glock 21 and be able to shoot that caliber only through that barrel only. It is a wildcat cartridge that just gives you a different option to shoot out of your gun with slight modification.

You should watch this:

I have handguns capable of shooting 9mm, 40 S&W, and 357 SIG with nothing more than a barrel swap and using the appropriate magazines. I know some folks that use the 40/357 sig mags for all three but I have found it works best to have the proper magazine for the caliber.

Someday I would like to have a G21 and convert it to 460 Rowland. It isn't going to happen any time soon, though.

MOAR velocity.
The Right to Keep and BEAR Arms is enshrined explicitly in both our State and Federal Constitutions, yet most of us are afraid to actually excercise that Right, for very good reason: there is a good chance of being arrested........ and  THAT is a damned shame.  III.

Gun designers are kinda obsessive and always think that Just One More Caliber is needed.

They are correct.  Otherwise, we'd be stuck with .38SPC, 9mm, and .45ACP.
Plus...You can name it after Yourself or Your Company, if you want.

Does anyone have a good link or resource to learn what ammunition goes with what firearm?  I don't know why but my brain just can't wrap around all the different ammo types and their application.  Any help or advice is appreciated!

First, Read Your Gun,  Gauge/Caliber is stamped on there somewhere.  Different places/Different guns.
Read up on that very same specific caliber on the web.  Read gunwriter articles.  Look at images.  Get thoroughly knowledgeable yourself.  Most important first step.  If still uncertain, go to a local experienced gunsmith.

Then:  Buy that very same exact ammo at the gunstore or local commercial range.
Match the ammo to the specific caliber or gauge designations on the side of the barrel. Match that designation exactly.
Get help from the Counter Guy Who Knows What He's Doing (Not all of them do, by a long shot.)

And Yes:  US ammo designations are a confusing mess.

And 9mm comes in at least six different ammo types with many more confusing designations:
9X17/.380ACP/9mmShort/9mmKurz,,
9X18/9mmMakarov
9mm/9mmNATO/9X19/9mmLuger yada,yada)
9X21/9mmRussian
9X23/9mm Bayard-Bergman
9X25

Counter guy once sold a student of mine .45GAP for use in a .45ACP 1911.  Said it would work just fine..

After all that, I get home and realize this...it has a 400 Corbon Barrel on it with a compensator. It won’t let me attach a photo as it says my cell phone picture is too big.

So with this, I can ONLY shoot 400 Corbon and nothing else, right?

Yes.   Only .400Corbon, with that barrel.

That cartridge has a bottle neck on it.  A .45ACP cartridge would not chamber; the .45ACP bullet would be too large.
If you have a Les Baer .400Corbon, you can get a barrel conversion kit to .45ACP.

At any rate, you just became a reloader.  Lee makes .400Corbon diesets.

Take another cell phone picture, use a smaller resolution.

Here's the WikiPedia on .400Corbon.

Thanks SFG. Will the normal 45 magazines work fine with the 400?

Here's how you find out:   You Try them.  That is, you run a dry (non-shooting) magazine loading test and see what's what.

Now....I'm not sure what you mean with respect to "normal" magazines.   If you have a .400Corbon pistol, it should/will have one (1) or more .400Corbon magazine(s) that came with the handgun.  They go together in a set.

Now...if you are using .45ACP magazines from another handgun, those other magazines may not even fit into the .400Corbon magazine well.   You could GENTLY try inserting them, but DO NOT force anything.   Things could get stuck.

Generally, the .400Corbon is a .45ACP derivative, which means that cartridges in both of these calibers will probably load into the same magazine.   Same as my .357SIG is a .40S&W derivative, and both of these cartridges will fit into the same magazine.   In my Glock33 the .357SIG and .40S&W magazines are also interchangeable.

Now.......It appears that you could use some hands-on help.   If you live in Omaha or reasonably close by, I'd be glad to visit with you as needed to help you get all of this lined out so that you are confident in your own right.

One More Thing:

It appears that maybe you have a Glock 21 in .45ACP.   I'm uncertain as to how you've gotten into a .400Corbon unless you have a Glock21 with a .400Corbon conversion barrel.

If you do have a Glock 21 with a .400Corbon conversion barrel and want to shoot .45ACP, then just buy a standard Glock 21 .45ACP barrel from just about any Glock store.  Install the Glock .45ACP barrel and shoot .45ACP.   The Glock 21 magazines are made specifically for .45ACP.

You will still want to consider reloading if you plan to do any significant amount of shooting.

SemperFi, you are the man.  I really appreciate you taking the time to help a newby like myself.  My father passed away 10 years ago and he was a professional outdoorsmen.  He left me all of his firearms, which is amazing, yet overwhelming.  I was raised hunting in the fields, so pistols are relatively new to me.  I have shot a vast majority of them, but it was with his direction, so I don't have the in and out knowledge that I am now going for.  I am constantly reading up on articles, blogs, etc., basically anything I can get my hands on to help me understand all these different firearms I now have.  So your direction means a lot to me.  If you have any advice on literature to help me along my way, please let me know.

Thank you!
