Rusty gun a rude surprise
Never trust a rusty gun.

One Omaha police officer learned that lesson earlier this month while checking a shotgun into the evidence room at Central Police Headquarters, 505 S. 15th St.

Officer Darrelle Bonam, a veteran of more than five years with the department, was booking the gun into evidence. While pulling back the rusty slide to check if it was empty, he touched the trigger and the gun went off, hitting a money-counting machine.

No one was injured in the incident, which occurred Feb. 3.

Officer Jacob Bettin, a police spokesman, said that anytime a firearm is discharged in a city building, the matter is reviewed by the Omaha Police Department's safety review committee to determine whether proper procedures and safety techniques were followed and whether disciplinary action is in order.

"This shows firearms are dangerous, even for people trained to properly handle them," Bettin said.

Perhaps you missed the spokesman's statement - guns (not incompetent city employees) are dangerous.

Obviously the officer did not properly handle the firearm by pulling the trigger. He was in violation of safety rules.

Just because he was a police officer doesn't mean he was trained to handle firearms. Many of them are only familiar with their service weapon.

If he isn't trained to handle weapons, he should be kept far away from them and only allowed to push pencils.

I travel across the country and when I get a chance I speak with the law enforcement I meet. Two police officers I met in Tampa, FL knew what brand (Beretta) of firearm they were issued, but did not know what the model was. I'm not even sure they knew the caliber. When I asked them they said it was a "Beretta 40". So I assume it was 40S&W, but not sure they knew that.

My sister-in-law is an officer in a small town. She is probably the only officer on the force who actually cleans her firearm. The others let it fowl up so it will fail in some way. Then they can complain and get new side arms. I think they get to purchase the old issue for a small amount. They might sell them, or maybe they finally clean them and add it to their collection. I've been told that a surprising number of police departments do not have an SOP on cleaning there firearms. Hard to believe.

How much you want to bet that A) the officer will not be disciplined in any way and B) That if I discharged a shotgun inside a city building then refused responsibility and claimed it was due to the dangerous firearm, I wouldn't get the same courtesy as said officer. I'm not saying he should go to jail but certainly should be punished. Being stupid should have consequences.

Definitely should have been. Even so, putting your finger on the trigger without clearing the weapon beforehand is negligence at its worst. The fact that someone trained as an officer of the law did this makes me worried for our safety indeed.

Have anyone ever watched the TV show "COPS"? It is real amuseing watching some of those idiots trying to figgure out how to open or removed the clip from the bad persons handgun. It is amazeing that they don`t hurt themselves.

Cops are not trained in all manner of firearms. Hell most of them barely know how their issued sidearm works. And as far as the TV show COPS goes, I see violations of rights everytime I watch the show. It is a good indoctrination tool though. If you see it often enough on TV it has to be legal.

Gunscribe I agree that not all cops are trained in all firearms. However they should be trained in firearm safety.I have gotten dirty looks from them when taking one in to OPD to register. I always check to see it is unloaded before sending it in to them.After watching one have problems trying to lock the slide back after seeing me do it I now send it in with it locked back.I also get them back in with the slide forward and not being able to see the gun at all times I again check it before putting it in the case and get funny looks then too.
