A 30-year-old Omaha man was critically injured in what appears to be a random shooting early Friday morning. Police say someone approached him outside his home at 168th Ave. and Pine asking for help with car trouble, then fired several shots.

The victim was rushed to Creighton Medical Center in critical condition shortly after midnight. His father, who also lives in the house, was treated at the scene for injuries caused by broken glass.

Police say the suspect was last seen driving North on 168th Street in a light-colored Honda.

At this point, there's nothing to indicate the victims knew the suspect. Police say the 30-year-old was outside having a cigarette when the suspect asked for help with his vehicle and a glass of water.

The victim's father became suspicious and wanted the man to leave. At that point the suspect opened fire and took off. The father got his rifle from inside the house and fired as the suspect ran away.

It's not clear if the suspect was hit. He was last seen driving North on 168th St. in a white or silver Honda Civic.

Just another reason Mr. Makarov rides with me anytime I travel to Omahorn!  Gettin' awful close to that side of town where my kids live with their mother. :(

Dad fires at son's assailant

By Andrew J. Nelson

After a man was shot and critically injured in front of a west Omaha house early Friday, his father fired back at the assailant.

Bullets flew, blasting through the walls of a house across the street and narrowly missing a woman?s head.

Bryan J. Hall, 30, was shot at least twice in his abdomen while talking with a man on the porch of the house where Hall lives with his father and grandmother.

Why would they transport a victim clear across town from west Omaha to downtown Creighton when there are hospitals and ERs all around where the shooting happened.

The designated Trauma Center for the day is where all serious traumatic injuries are transported to.  The two area ER that function as Trauma Centers are Creighton and UNMC.  Tues, Fri and Sunday you go to UNMC.  Mon, Wed, Thurs and Saturday you go to Creighton.  Being a trauma center means that you have all available resources "at the hospital"...not at home on call.  I know it baffles people when the rescue squads transport someone involved in traumatic situation to the Trauma center when another ER is closer.  However, that is what their protocol for treating people tells them the have to do.

Yep.  And if I was shot I would rather go to the level 4 trauma center than the closer ER.

What pisses me off here more than the officer not frisking the suspect before placing in the cruiser is that the judge is going to accept $2,500 bail and let the person walk?!! Are they out of their mind?!! The guy shot someone at point blank range and should not have the option of posting bail. Everybody knows he is going to bolt if they release him from jail. Also they should charge him with attempted murder. This is ridiculous. We are going to see this guy on Americas Most Wanted in a few weeks because the justice system is failing us once again.
