.22 Conversion Kit for AR-15

Looking for suggestions for a .22 conversion kit for an AR.  Recomendations....

Wild Goose on here bought a Tac Sol upper and has had very good luck.

A dedicated upper will give you better accuracy than a conversion kit.  I would give a serious look into the Tac Sol mentioned here.

Hey allen, I've been mulling this over myself. 

The cmmg kit is about 250$ from Bravo company.  a dedicated upper will run you about twice that.  Which I can't really stomach paying since a new S&W or similar full M4 style .22 rifle is barely more than that. 

I understand the accuracy argument so my leaning is toward having 2 separate rifles. 

Does anyone have a link to a full upper for less than $500?

I haven't seen a full 22lr upper for under 500.   I can get you a much better price on a M&P15-22, like you said.

But I have read alot of questionable things on the M&P quality.  Some are great rifles (just so you stick with the recomended ammo) and other blow up and have misfires and even discharge before the breacj is fully closed.  Don't know if that is the direction to go as well.

I have an older JA Ciener kit that I use in an upper that I put together for it, though I'm sure for plinking that it would work fine in any of them.

I am using an older 1/12 twist 20" Colt barrel that I'm sure has a few ten-thousands of rounds down the pipe.  I found it used on ARFCOM, so it's hard to say.  I have it hooked up to an A2 upper, no optics used...just the iron sights. It is plenty accurate enough for my uses

It functions about 99% so far with Federal bulk pack ammo, no complaints at all.

One thing (so I've heard) to keep in mind with a conversion kit vs. a dedicated upper is that a lot of the barrels on AR's these days have too fast of a twist for .22 LR.  1/7 and 1/8 twist are all the rage.

Personally, I am concerned about the effects of barrel  leading and gas tube deposits. So, I will  not use a conversion kit on an AR15 that I want to keep ready for defensive use.

That being said I have not decided on a dedicated upper vs. complete rifle.

I got a CMMG conversion from Botach Tactical last winter during some promo for $135 with free shipping. I would not necessarily recommend Botach as I experienced poor C/S & have read of questionable business practices. But the conversion works as advertised- I've only used it for plinking out to about 50yds. If you shop around you should be able to get one for ~$150.

HK is rumored top be putting their name on a complete 22lr Ar style carbine. May or may not be any better than the Colt or S&W. Ruger's 10/22 set up to look like an AR would probably be my choice at this time, if an AR look were important for a 22. Exeter Arms has a full auto 10/22 that empties a 50 round drum in no time flat. Talk about cool.

I have had a CMMG since they came out about 18 mos ago.  They are great after about 200 rounds.  Flawless now.  CDNN in Amarillo TX has them routinely on sale for $189.00.  CMMG now has a stainless version (which I wish I had), and CDNN sells for the same price.  Also, if you catch them right you can get the kit with two mags vice the standard one.  Mags at CDNN are $19.99 which is cheaper than my dealer discount at Brownells.  Accuracy is not really that bad at CQB distances. My platforms are EoTech equipped.  5.56 and .22 are comparable out to around 35-40 yards. 
As for Dan's concern, I switch the kit between all my ARs.  Clean up isn't all that more than with 5.56 (and brother I keep all my guns meticulous).

FYI, I was at Scheel's in Lincoln today and they had a used M&P 15-22 with flip up front & rear sights for $429.  You might be able to talk them down some more.
