Friend leaving state post

By Bob Glissmann
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

The director of the Nebraska Office of Violence Prevention has submitted his resignation to Gov. Dave Heineman.

Mike Friend, 49, has led the office since August 2009. He said he is leaving that job later this month to become director of the Nebraska chapter of Americans for Prosperity, a conservative political advocacy group that promotes limited government and free markets.

The Crime Commission will meet later this month to consider the advisory board?s recommendations and decide how to award $350,000 in anti-violence grants. The same amount of money was disbursed in anti-violence grants in 2009.

Any guesses on who will be appointed to this position?

Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom.   J. F. K.

Not sure there is enough power in that office for either of their appetites.
