I did a fair amount of reading at http://7.62x54r.net/ before I bought one last time they had them on sale.

Mainly matching numbers between the barrel, bolt, and mag floor plate, and good rifling without the crown being counterbored.  Beyond that you can start looking for specific arsenals - Tula is typically considered more desirable than Ishvesk since there were fewer made.

Yes great site for info. Mostly just check to see if the bore/ rifling is 'washed out' otherwise these old things just plain shoot.

Every now and then, I've seen a surprise Mosin at Cabela's too.  They had a New England Westinghouse one a while back (I did not buy it, it was gone when I went to look for it again) and they had a Finnish M39, which I did buy.  According to the flyer I got in the mail, the sale ends January 30, to answer the last question.

Just picked up a pair. They are 91/30s from the late 30s/early 40s in fantastic condition with all matching numbers.

Or you could get an M-39 here:

http://gunsnammo.com/

Nebraska Gun has a couple M-39's too.  I have a 91/30 and an M-39 and there's no comparison.  The M-39 is to the 91/30 like a Ferrari is to a Yugo.

91/30's are fun though.  I need to get another.

That didnt take long. At $89 it doesnt surprise me. Usually its $99 at Cabelas. I found a 91/59 out ther 2 years ago for $125and jumped on that.

For what it's worth, Jeff at Nebraska Gun usually has Mosins for I think around $100.  If you live in Lincoln you're breaking even with the Cabela's deal by the time you factor in gas money.  With my gas guzzler I'm WAY ahead :D

WildGoose and I are working on a vintage bolt action rifle match to be held at the Ike's range, probably starting in April or so.  I'll post more details when we have everything finalized, but if you needed an excuse to buy a Mosin here it is.  It's not intended to be super competitive, just an excuse to get these old warhorses out of the safe and make some noise.  You can spend $100 on the rifle, another $100 or so on some surplus ammo, and you're all set for a whole season of competition.  I can't think of a cheaper way to get into match shooting.
