Any interest in a Group Buy of 5.56 62gr M855?
« on: October 18, 2011, 12:05:58 PM »
Just throwing out some feelers to see if there is any interest.  Click on link below, look at image, or read the details reproduced below.

http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=44665/Product/5-56MM-62GR-420-ROUND-AMMO-CAN?mc_id=6216

The details...
Quote
5.56MM 62GR 420-ROUND AMMO CAN FEATURES:
  • 5.56x45mm 62 grain full metal jacket
  • 420 rounds loaded on 10 round stripper clips
  • Lake City green tipped ammunition
  • Brass cased, boxer primed, non-corrosive
  • XM855 bullet, same as current U.S. military issue
  • Stripper clip guide is included
  • Packaged in .30 caliber ammunition can
  • Can weight: 16 lbs
  • SS109 Steel penetrator core
BENEFITS:

  • Lake City ammunition loaded to military specifications
  • Loaded on 10 round stripper clips for easy loading and transport
  • Packaged in .30 caliber ammo can so that ammo can be easily stacked, stored, and carried
  • Boxer primed reloadable brass
Check range rules before using on certain ranges that prohibit using steel core ammo.
The last sentence concerns me.  Will Ikes allow this ammo?  Or is there any other reason this is not a good deal?

Apparently Brownells has a shipping flat rate of $12.95 regardless of the number of items/weight ordered.  This would make the total $162.94 ($149.99+$12.95), or $0.3879 per round.

I was thinking this was a good price and might produce some nice reloadable Lake City brass for those so inclined.  Otherwise, it could be good to keep in storage for the purpose of defending the home front during economic collapse and ensuing pandemonium, or an all out zombie outbreak.

One thing I would request, if I put this deal together, I would like to keep at least one of the ammo cans.

No problems at Ikes , but no indoor ranges allow steel core.

Personally I would look for M193 type 55 gr FMJ vs M855 62gr penetrator rounds

Steel core is fine at the Lincoln Ikes.  You won't be able to use it at any  matches that have steel targets, like ENGC sometimes does for multigun.  It's designed to penetrate barriers so it tears up steel targets.

Those are M855 rounds. :)

Any idea what kind of bulk discount they'd offer? I'd buy a single can if we can get a discount below the 149.99 with bulk.

Buy 16 or more and get it down to $139.95.

Rod over at Moeller Arms has one of the 840rd cans in stock. I'd bet that the price is fairly close to $300-$320.  Give the local boy a call.

Do you remember if it's the 62 or the 55 grain, Doug?

Let me work on this a little more.  I was going to contact Brownells, PSA, etc. and ask how much we would have to order to get the price down to $139.95 + shipping.

The problem, as Dan W. pointed out when I PM'd him about my idea of a group ammo buy, is shooters tastes for ammo are SO diverse, that getting a group to agree on the same thing may be next to impossible.

I have a 1:8 twist on my Wylde barrel, so I was looking for a heavier bullet.  For close quarters work or zombie annihilation, some 55 grain lead core would be fine too.  Though I would prefer to engage the zombies from a much further distance...less likely to get bitten that way.  ;D   Another consideration is the brass.  As I understand, Lake City is pretty good stuff, so I thought that might be enticing to some.

So what weight bullet would the interested parties be partial to? 55gr, +55 to 69gr, +70gr?  Or are your needs more specific?

It's M855 Green tip 62 Gr.  840 rds on strips, but I don't think it has chargers. It's the same thing as the 420 cans, just double the product in the bigger can.

What does anyone know about PMC?  Do they make good stuff?  I don't think I have ever purchased any of their ammo.  I found some great deals (~$0.31/round including shipping) on some PMC ammo.

PMC makes some pretty good shootin' ammo.  Comes out of S Korea as I recall (hey they are making better cars than we are).   I've used it pretty extensively in my ARs (55 gr FMJ).  Also, bought and used in 9mm 115 gr FMJ which was a police buy from GT Distributors about 2 months ago.  Good brass.

If you hit 10,000 rounds of .223 (most types), the price will drop 10 cents per box and the shipping charges will drop to whatever our actual cost is on shipping. Let me know if this applies, because I would have to process it offline or at least go back into your order after you make it and issue the discount that way (as a refund), which might be easier for both of us.

Hi Greg,

I put most of the 223 target ammo out for a "cut-to the-bone" lowest price I can afford to sell for type of price, but if you want 5000 rounds or more of one particular item let me know and I'll take a look but it would not be much maybe a few dollars off per case at best, a lot of this stuff only clears 5-7% profit by the end of the sale. Shipping varies by weight, so if you add an item or 2 or 3, etc, to the shopping cart then click "checkout" and the first thing that happens in checkout is a shipping quote is generated
thanks

AbleAmmo has PMC Bronze Line Rifle Ammunition 223A, 223 Remington, FMJ Boat-Tail, 55 GR, 3200 fps, 20 Rds/Box

http://www.ableammo.com/catalog/bronze-line-rifle-ammunition-223a-remington-boat-tail-3200-rdsbox-p-106834.html

50 boxes @ $5.29/box + 20.73 shipping = $285.23.  That is a final price of $0.285 per round.

It appears that the only other option for less expensive brass is to buy 10K rounds which would only drop the cost about a half cent per round ($0.10/box).  The next step is to go with steel ammo.

I will need to check finances, but I would probably be able to do 300 to 500 rounds of the AbleAmmo deal above.  Anyone else interested?

Thanks gsd.  I have considered steel case ammo and their low prices.  Though, I was not sure if most people would be interested in it.  I have heard that some guns don't handle it well, and I am assuming there are some who would like brass to reload.  Lastly, I have been told that it may be less accurate than some of the brass rounds, though I'm not looking for match ammo.

If we get a large group that chimes in and wants to go that direction, I will have to get some to try in my rifle to make sure it will work for me.

How about we do this?  If you want in on the deal, list the number of rounds you would like.
