Here is what Ben Nelson wrote me today.  I havent seen any info to support the 2005 date....
Dear Ross:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Fast and Furious operation carried out by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE).  I appreciate hearing your thoughts on this important issue.

The BATFE began Project Gunrunner in 2005 as a pilot program in Laredo, Texas, to help combat firearms trafficking into Mexico.  As part of this program, an operation titled "Fast and Furious" was developed and implemented.  BATFE officials claimed this operation would allow individuals to purchase large quantities of firearms on behalf of Mexican drug cartels, which the BATFE would then track in an effort to dismantle gun trafficking routes.  However, these firearms were not given proper supervision; and many subsequently disappeared.

Like many Nebraskans, I was upset and frustrated by the total lack of foresight and responsibility displayed by the BATFE in this endeavor.  Two Congressional hearings have been held to get to the bottom of this issue, and BATFE Director Kenneth Melson has resigned. In addition, the Senate recently approved by a vote of 99?0 an amendment submitted by Senator John Cornyn to prevent funds from being allocated to allow the transfer of unsupervised firearms to agents of drug cartels. As this issue progresses, I will continue to listen to the concerns of Nebraskans about this program.

Thank you again for contacting me.  The democratic process requires the input of concerned and watchful citizens such as yourself, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts and ideas.

Sincerely,

Ben Nelson
U.S. Senator

Well... If that doesn't make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, I don't know what will.   ::)

If you notice he is blaiming it on Bush, how much like ...well I won't go there.  Yes in 2005 there was a program that was a small test, it was shut down because they found they could not follow the firearms, in 2009 under Obama and Holder they restarted the program and expanded it, and you see what that got us.

Ben get your head out of... the sand.

Andy, where can I find more information on the resumption of the program in 2009?  I'd like to look that over.

The most complete coverage (that can be searched through) of F&F is from one of the "Bloggers" that broke the story, David Codrea, Gun Rights Examiner. His articles can all be found through these links (he has set up pages for linking all the articles):

The other site to look at is Mike Vanderboegh's Sipsey Street Irregulars: http://sipseystreetirregulars.blogspot.com/

They have the information on Project Gun Runner as well as Operation Fast and Furious now known as Project Gunwalker.  These are the folks that found the wistle blowers and got them in contact with the House and Senate and the recognized press.

CCRKBA BLASTS SENATE ANTI-GUNNERS FOR SHIFTING BLAME ON GUN WALKING

BELLEVUE, WA – Today’s hearing on Operation Fast and Furious before the Senate Judiciary Committee once again provided an opportunity for two leading Senate gun prohibitionists to try spreading the blame for botched gun trafficking, and change the debate to arguments for more gun control, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said.

The committee questioned Attorney General Eric Holder for two hours on Fast and Furious, and other Justice Department issues. But it was about the seriously mishandled gun trafficking investigation where committee partisans tried their bait-and-switch routine, CCRKBA said.

“Senators Charles Schumer and Dianne Feinstein tried to link discredited gun walking tactics to the earlier Bush-era Operation Wide Receiver,” said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “Blaming Bush is ‘so yesterday’, while their gun control agenda is on tap for tomorrow.”

Texas Sen. John Cornyn revealed the stark differences between Wide Receiver, conducted with the full cooperation of the Mexican government, and the Obama administration’s Operation Fast and Furious, done specifically without the knowledge of Mexican authorities, or our own officials assigned to Mexico City.

“It’s outrageous, but predictable, that these two partisan gun control fanatics would try such a ruse to confuse the public, and the issue,” Gottlieb stated.

Holder’s definition of a new mandatory multiple long gun sales reporting regulation as a “reasonable requirement” is a tipoff, Gottlieb said. It’s the first step toward a nationwide regulation that could turn into a back-door registry of all semiautomatic modern sport-utility rifles under an anti-gun White House and Congress, he suggested.

Schumer concentrated on linking Fast and Furious to the Bush administration, while criticizing the Republican-led House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform has been “selective” in its focus.

“Schumer and Feinstein want to waste time and deflect public attention by blaming Bush while quietly promoting their own anti-gun agenda,” Gottlieb said. “They may as well have used President Obama’s teleprompters from which to read their lines.”

GOA news:  Fast and Furious Probe Widening!

The congressional investigation into the gunrunning scandal known as Fast and Furious is in full swing this week, with the House Judiciary Committee to hold a round of hearings on Thursday.

More and more reporters in the mainstream media are now taking a closer look at the scandal, which GOA first began alerting members to in January. Under the program, thousands of guns purchased with federal tax dollars were allowed to “walk” into Mexico, at which point they disappeared into the hands of violent drug cartels.

Just this week, the New York Times reported that the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) is involved in an enormous, multi-million dollar money laundering scheme aimed, like Fast and Furious, at Mexican drug cartels.

But neither program has resulted in significant arrests (not to mention convictions) of drug kingpins, and no cartels have been brought down after several years of activities by agencies spread across the federal bureaucracy.

One former DEA official expressed frustration to the Times, noting that, “My rule was that if we are going to launder money, we better show results.  Otherwise, the D.E.A. could wind up being the largest money launderer in the business, and that money results in violence and deaths.”

This news infuriated Rep. Darrell Issa, the powerful chairman of the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, who announced that his investigation will be expanding to include the activities of the DEA “money-running” scandal.

In a blistering letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, Rep. Issa takes Holder to task for arming drug cartels with thousands of firearms, and bankrolling their operations with millions of American taxpayer dollars—perhaps, even hundreds of millions of dollars.

Issa wrote to Holder that the DEA revelation “again calls your leadership into question. The managerial structure you have implemented lacks appropriate operational safeguards to prevent the implementation of such dangerous schemes. The consequences have been disastrous.”

With every news report, more and more information leaks out from a Justice Department that seems intent on stonewalling and misleading the Congress. GOA is keeping the pressure on congressmen to call for Holder’s resignation and to pursue possible criminal wrongdoing by government bureaucrats.

GOA leaders will be attending Thursday’s hearing and will be briefing the media on this burgeoning scandal.

It is also important to continue to remind the politicians that, according to the testimony of many current and former ATF officials, one of the goals of Fast and Furious was to bolster the case for more gun control laws here at home.

As you can see, December in Washington is turning into a lobbying blitz.

Documents: ATF used "Fast and Furious" to make the case for gun regulations

Documents obtained by CBS News show that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) discussed using their covert operation "Fast and Furious" to argue for controversial new rules about gun sales.

I never thought I would see the day when the Executive Branch would be willing to see innocent people killed to further a political agenda.  If they're willing to do this, where would they stop?  When will innocent Americans start disappearing because they disagree with the President and his henchmen?

And no, I don't think I'm overreacting.

After that speech Obama gave in Kansas, I think anything is possible

Quote
Now, it’s a simple theory.  And we have to admit, it’s one that speaks to our rugged individualism and our healthy skepticism of too much government.  That’s in America’s DNA.  And that theory fits well on a bumper sticker.  But here’s the problem:  It doesn’t work.  It has never worked. It didn’t work when it was tried in the decade before the Great Depression.  It’s not what led to the incredible postwar booms of the ‘50s and ‘60s.  And it didn’t work when we tried it during the last decade. I mean, understand, it’s not as if we haven’t tried this theory.

Here's where the cartels' guns come from.  26% of the guns sold to their police and military, approved by our government, go to criminals.

CBS evening news ran a story this afternoon on the upcoming hearings on F&F in congress. They included a report from their gal who broke the story that recently recovered documents showed discussions within the DOJ on using the results from F&F to promote new restrictions on firearms ownership. Its really over the top to have a government agency creating cirmes to use as an excuse for the removal of our rights. Dose no one out in media land not see just how dangerous this is? We are indeed in dire times.

Holder faced the ire of skeptical lawmakers who are demanding accountability. Wisconsin Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner told Holder Thursday that he considers impeachment on the table if Holder doesn't figure out who's responsible.

"You know, the thing is, is that if we don't get to the bottom of this -- and that requires your assistance on that -- there is only one alternative that Congress has, and it's called impeachment," he said. "It is an expensive and messy affair. And I don't want to go this far."
