Overheard at Cabela's today...

So, I was having my SKS checked out at Cabela's today (turns out they were selling some Yugo SKS' that had been demilitarized by having holes drilled through the barrels near the chamber area, mine is Romanian, so no worries) and a gentlemen was shopping and inquired about purchasing some handguns.  He was looking at two.  He asked the Cabela's guy how many he could buy at once.  The Cabela's employee said he could buy as many as he wanted, but if he bought more than one, all his info would be faxed off to the FBI as soon as the paper work was filled out.  I've never heard anything like that.  Is that a Cabela's policy, or am I missing some sort of information?  FWIW, I've never purchased more than one handgun at a time, myself, I'm not made of money, heh.  Oh, and the gentleman only bought one of the guns.

Don't know about this but I do know that here in Lincoln you can't buy more than one handgun from the same dealer on the same day. Or least that is the way it was a few years ago. You can buy one from one dealer then drive across town and buy the other from another dealer in the same day.

The ATF requires reporting of multiple handgun sales.

Yowch!  And I somehow missed knowing about that ATF reporting requirement.  So, that's what I learned today.  Thanks, now I can vegetate the rest of the day!

In Lincoln or anywhere else in Nebraska you can purchase more than 1 handgun from the same FFL on the same day.  If you do, it is supposed to be reported to the BATFE (NOT THE FBI unless you mention to the salesman you are building a thermobaric device in your spare time ). I can't recall the specifics beyond that.   This is vice the routine one HG purchase where the 4473 is simply kept onsite for potential inspection. 
This can be avoided if there is a full 7 days between each purchase.  I've experienced this option personally with Nebraska Gun in Lincoln about 2-3 years ago.  I am sure there are fellow forumites who will take the time and find and post the actual laws.

My brother in law wanted to buy 2 handguns at acher arms a couple of weeks ago and was told to buy one now and the other in a couple weeks.  They said if he bought them both he would be put on some list the government has.  They didn't elaborate any further than that.

Cabelas got a deal on SKSs and sold them for $179-199 recently.  It turned out they were so cheap because some had been demilled by drilling the hole in the barrel.  Someone then reassembled and exported them to the U.S. for sale.  Unfortunately, the problem wasn't found until some folks took their rifles out and had the stock shatter right where their hand was.

Well this sucks. I was gonna have a s&w model 500, 642, and a glock 23 shipped in about a month when I'm old enough to purchase this constitutional right. Looks like I'm gonna be on a list for transferring these all at once...

Again....all the one day purchase does is directly inform the BATFE.  Not agreeing in principle with the process.  Call it a "list"...call it unconstitutional...call what you will....there is nothing clandestine and black choppers are likely not going to circle your home the next day.  You're on the "list" when the BATFE inspects randomly your FFLs files one day on your long gun purchase from however many years before.  If it bothers you wait 7 full days between each purchase and "Fuhget about it!!!"

I looked a little more into this subject a few hours ago and came to the conclusion that if you wait 5 days you can get another without the government thinking you are a terrorist. Ha just kidding, under the Obama administration all gun owners are considered terrorists, but that 5 day period of buying from the same FFL somehow makes buying multiple guns not suspicious. One story I heard was how this started back in the 70's when people in Miami were buying dozens of guns a day and were illegally shipping them to Caribbean countries. Not sure on it but seems like a viable reason, 2 handguns at once doesn't seem like a big deal... Maybe 10 or more gets fishy, especially if they are evil glocks

Saw this on the ATF website regarding FFL responsibilities:

Reports of multiple sales of two or more handguns sold at one time or during any five consecutive business days are also required to be submitted to ATF. 18 USC 923(g)(3).

I can see why they'd want to keep track of bulk firearms sales, but two handguns seems a little silly...
