What Caliber to build?
« on: December 14, 2012, 08:15:18 AM »
I picked up another lower yesterday, and I am having trouble deciding what caliber to build it in.

So I figured I'ld ask you guys:)

BTW, it's one of the last Calico Jacks from Spikes. Little buggers are getting kind of scarce..
It is highly likely the above post may offend you. I'm fine with that.

what calibers do you have now?  is there any specific thing you want this next gun to do?  ie - hunting, accurate, long range, etc...

for me i used 1 lower and SBR'd it.  then put a 5.56 upper, 300BLK upper and 22LR upper for it.  kind of like 3 SBR's for the price of one.

even if you don't SBR it, you can still do 5.56, 300BLK, 22LR, 9mm, maybe even a 6.5 or 50Beowulf.

Yeah, depends on what you want to use it for.  I personally think a .22 upper is one of the best ar accessories you can buy.  Of course the lower doesn't have anything to do with the caliber, that's determined by the upper.

My lil brother has a .450 upper. That'll put a lil thump on ya!

(Friendly FYI: make sure the collapsible stock does not unlatch under hard recoil.  It will quite effectively put a nice crescent moon scar on yer brow/nose ! ) :'(

I've tossed around the idea of a big bore upper some day.  They look like a lot of fun.  I like recoil.

And I 'spose you happen to know someone who might have one available for purchase? ;)

i would add, a 22LR is fun and very cheap to shoot.  the big bores might be a little more expensive, especially in ammo.

A LOT more expensive for ammo.  When you start shooting oddball calibers you really need to seriously think about reloading if you want to do much shooting, unless you are rolling in money.

I'm kind of kicking around the idea of a 6.8, but on the other hand, and SBR would be nice...

Get both.  Buy a 16" 6.8 upper now and send your Form 1 off to the atf.  When the stamp comes back you can always have the barrel cut down or get a  shorty upper in another caliber.

Get both.

well said.  you can always send your barrel(s) off to ADCO or someone else and have them trimmed down.

might as well start your paperwork now.  it'll be about 7 or so months.

I've been working with an attorney next to my shop.  We've been talking about NFA trusts, among other things.  If you want, you can call me we can discuss your options and I'll give you his name and number.  He can offer these for less than you might think.

I like recoil.

You need to put a magnum 3" 12ga 15 pellet shell through a stoeger side by side :).  Hell, if you're ever in the Omaha / Bellevue area, I'll gift a few shells to you :).

Concerning an upper.. I prefer bigger bores myself as well.  A standard 308 would be the smallest I'm willing to go (outside of 22lr for inexpensive shooting).  338 Lupua would be second choice.

Dunno how the bigger-than-that rounds handle in the evil black rifles (which I admittedly don't like... but 308/338 in one would be moderately interesting).
hoppe's #9 is not the end all be all woman catching pheramone people make it out to be ... cause i smell of it 2 or 3 times a week but remain single  >:D

Rod, I'll give you a call tomorrow if that is all right, just got back from a flying trip to my dads. Besides, it's late.

And I had no idea Rob could do trusts, but that wouldn't surprise me. he's full of tricks lol.

I don't think Rob does them any more.  Some attorney complained is what I heard.
