Ben Stoeger/Matthew Mink 2-Day USPSA Competition Shooting Class, April 13-14

Ben Stoeger and Matthew Mink are coming to the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club in April to teach a two-day USPSA Shooting course on April 13th and 14th.

Basic blurb from Matt's website:

This is the class that Thomas Howard has put together for the Omaha shooting crew, to be held at the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club in Louisville, NE. This class will be a 2 day USPSA class to get ready for the upcoming shooting season. Day 1 will be drill oriented, and Day 2 will be a mini-match, putting what we learned to the test. There will be a lot of individual coaching, group learning, and shooting theory over the 2 days. Ben and Matt will be awarding special dogtags to the shooters who complete certain things and win some of the drills! Plan on shooting 1000rds, bring more if possible. We will supply drinks for the range and lunch for both days. Bring your own snacks. Please note that each student will be responsible for an additional $10 payable to the range itself for the student fee. More info coming!

Ben Stoeger (Production GM) is the current USPSA Production Division National Champion, and was in 2011 also.  He's blunt, outspoken, has no apparent filters on what he should or should not say, and has spent a LOT of time working on understanding what makes for a good shooter.  His first classification in USPSA was "GM" after only about 5000 rounds of live fire practice.  (And lots and lots of dryfire.)

You don't manage that unless you really know how to perform focused, effective practice.

Matthew Mink (Production, Limited, and Limited-10 GM) has numerous USPSA and IPDA major wins, is freakishly accurate, and for those who know what this means, got 9th (and 90% of Bob Vogel's score) at the 2012 L-10 Nationals shooting L-10 Minor with his Production rig.

I know both Ben and Matt, and not only are they outstanding high-level shooters, but they really have put in significant amounts of time working on understanding what makes a good shooter.  I've also spoken to a number of people who have been in one of their classes (they teach classes separately, but occasionally they also work together) and the consensus is uniformly that students of all experience and skill levels learn a LOT from them.  They have different viewpoints on a number of aspects of shooting, and you get it all--plus you'll probably get to watch them argue, which is always amusing.

The class will be at the Eastern Nebraska Gun Club at 12700 Hwy 66, Louisville, NE.

It only costs $395.  Two days, two GM instructors---and less than $400.  They are supplying drinks and lunch---you just have to show up with gear and lots of ammunition.  (That price is ridiculous, and I told them that they need to up their fee---but only after our class.)

I might be interested this, I started USPSA just to shoot and move with some purpose, but that competition bug keeps biting.

I'm thinking that if you haven't done any USPSA, it probably won't be for you.  While the shooting skills don't change (and they'll be teaching significant shooting skills) the safety aspects (and rules) of USPSA would be new and confusing for people, plus the sections on stage breakdown and choices wouldn't make sense.  As such, it would make things hard for people to work the skills if they weren't used to the rules and the context.

I know they teach other types of classes, but this one is designed as a USPSA Fundamentals class, so it really is written for people who shoot competition.

As for skill level---I've heard from people from D-class to M-class that they all got good stuff from Ben and Matt's classes. 

Can we expect to be verbally chastised, offended, abused, or all of the above?  I like learning from the best, but I don't learn well under duress.

Verbally chastised?  I doubt it.
Offended?  Perhaps once in awhile. But Ardena will smack Ben and everything will be all right.
Abused?  No.  Except for Ardena. And again, she'll smack Ben and everything will be all right.

When you meet Ben, you'll get what I'm talking about----there is no such thing as a sacred cow to Ben, which makes things interesting.

Let me put it this way---I think teachers who abuse their students are idiots.  Stressing students in specific drills for specific reasons---that's one thing.  But scoring points off students to look cool or just because the teacher thinks it is funny?  Not so much.

And I'm going to be in the class, trying to learn something. 

Ben and Matt are good guys, and they really know how to shoot.  It'll be good stuff.

I first posted about this class approximately 3 weeks ago, and half the spots are now filled.  Yes, the class isn't for another couple of months (not until April)  nonetheless, if you are interested, you are going to want to reserve yourself a spot.
