The instructor's bio:

Stefan Salmonson is a licensed deputy sheriff/tactical trainer, licensed private detective, licensed protective agent, certified personal protection specialist (Body Guard), international security consultant, experienced military specialist, airline transport pilot and professional speaker.  Stefan is also a federally credentialed contract investigator for the United States Department of Homeland Security.

Know where the exits are?  Blockade doors with furniture?  Shoot the SOB multiple times in places it really, really hurts and repeat as necessary?  Get out and don't come back into the building? 

Maybe I'm not thinking this all the way through, but this doesn't seem like rocket science.

I wonder if this is geared more towards gun free zones?  As a student, I can't legally carry on campus.  Of course, even when not carrying I still practice good situational awareness.  I always know where the exits are, sit with my back to a wall with a good view of all the entrances to the room, etc.  UNL has some brief instructions on their website about what to do in case of an active shooter:

If an active shooter enters your office or classroom:

Try to remain calm. Dial 911 from a University telephone or 911 from a cellular phone, if possible and alert police to the shooter's location; if you can't speak, leave the line open so the dispatcher can listen to what's taking place. If there is absolutely no opportunity for escape or hiding, it might be possible to negotiate with the shooter; attempting to overpower the shooter with force should be considered a very last resort, after all other options have been exhausted. If the shooter leaves the area, proceed immediately to a safer place and do not touch anything that was in the vicinity of the shooter.

Interesting advice.  Call 911 when the shooter is in the same room with you?  Try to negotiate with a lunatic?  Only fight back as a LAST resort?  What a load of bull.

What if there are multiple shooters and some of them are waiting for you outside the building?

Personally, I'm planning to attend for two reasons.
1. You can always benefit from new information and/or reminders on existing information.
2. My son's school administrator wants to put me on the security committee.  I've given some thought to active shooter/gun-free/children-filled scenarios but can't honestly say that I feel adequately equipped to deal with this previously unfamiliar scenario.
