I'd rather have this "little thumper" instead..  ;)

http://world.guns.ru/assault/rus/ash-12_7-assault-rifle-e.html

This new Russian “.50-caliber” cartridge bears certain conceptual similarity to a family of big-bore cartridges, developed in USA for AR-15 platform, such as .499 LWR or .50 Beowulf, although Russian cartridge uses longer case. It also can use very light (for its caliber) bullets as well as heavy ones, while its American counterparts usually are loaded with heavy bullets weighting 19 gram / 300 grs and up.
The ASh-12.7 assault rifle itself is of bullpup layout, with stamped steel receiver and polymer housing / stock. It is believed to have gas operated, rotary bolt action. Firing controls include two separate levers – fire mode selector (Semi / Auto) at the rear and ambidextrous safety (Safe / Fire) above the pistol grip. There are several configurations of the basic rifle. First one features integral carrying handle with built-in rear diopter sight and folding front sigh. A length of the Picatinny rail is installed on the carrying handle to accept various optical sights. Another version that was observed on some photos features “flat top” configuration with Picatinny rail running atop of the receiver, and rear and front sights installed on folding bases. Other variations include either a Picatinny rail below the forend or an 40mm underbarrel grenade launcher. Muzzle devices include massive muzzle brake or quick-detachable sound moderator (silencer)

12.7x55 case(on right side) compared to .499 LWR, .50 Beowulf and 7,62x39 for scale
Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Oh look, they made a gadget to replace a skilled m203 operator.

Meh.

And the Russians made their version of Cooper's "Thumper" concept..... in typical Russian fashion:  Bigger, more powerful, and clunkier.

The bottom one..lol..yep, looks `clunky` indeed...prolly function fresh out of a mud hole though.

$20,000-$30,000 each?...  can't we just wait for the Chinese version to come out in 2-3 months, it'll probably only cost $200-$300 plus S&H :P

It reminds me of a video I saw during Gulf War II when a Marine division approached Baghdad from the South. A 10,000 man elite Republican Guard unit rolled out to meet them.  As the RG approached the Marines split into two groups and one went on the East side and one on the West side, getting the RG in a pincer movement.   The weapon which did most of the damage was a 1.25" air-burst shell that exploded in the air 10 to 20 feet above the RG units.  They were in trenches, behind berms, trenches, tanks and light armor.  Didn't matter.   Reports said that in a stretch of about 1 1/2 miles long an a quarter mile wide the bodies were close  enough  one could walk  from one end to the other, or across, without stepping onto the sand.

Putting that weapon  into the hands of soldiers on the ground will make it nearly impossible for enemy combatants to hide in trenches or behind walls, or in rooms with open windows.  They will have to stay more than 250 yards away to stay alive.  It will eliminate threats from rag-tag rebels, like those fighting the Syrian army.    That will leave only snipers and longer range weapons, which most rag-tag fighters do not have.   Neither do American citizens, CCW or not.

I though every able-bodied Nebraskan worth his salt could down a galloping deer from 400+ yards with his Daddy's .30-06? (using open sights, of course)

When I lived in Colorado and went deer hunting there I saw several who  THOUGHT they could do  that.  Some of them even confused me for a deer.  They got a real surprise when the "deer" they were shooting at shot back! :D

I worked for a guy that was a Marine commander in his past and I asked him about this new tech when I first read about it, oh 2 years ago or so.  He said it was not a game changer, but in certain circumstances would be quite useful.

Personally, the extra weight and ammo would not be worth the effort in a fluid combat enviornment.  Patrols and the like, yeah maybe, but not for the day to day war.

I saw a video of a platoon on patrol in Afghanistan (don't know when) and they had with them a multi-wheeled vehicle that looked like a modified golf cart, sans, sun bonnet, that was loaded with ammo, water, food and other supplies.   It looked similar to the one shown in this video, but I don't remember it being as big:

This would give squads a significant increase in fire power and contact time.

They didnt have those when I was humping an M60 around for a living.  :)
