Any Shotgunners Tried Winchester AA TrAAckers????
« on: May 18, 2013, 11:08:58 PM »
I've Never Seen 'Em, but From What I've Read on the Topic............

TrAAckers are shotgun wads that retain about 1/8 ounce of the shot charge, which gives the wads added weight such that they stay with the shot string/pattern much longer, rather than dropping out very quickly like standard lightweight plastic shot wads.   They come in blaze orange (cloudy days) and black (for sunny days).   Or maybe vice-versa....Whatever.

Winchester literature claims that the trapshooter can visually track the wad toward the clay bird and verify or adjust his target lead as needed.

[Now that's all I know about TrAAckers, except that DanW shoots the clay birds with the actual TrAAcker wads instead of the shot string.   (In Handicap Doubles, no less)]

I tried to buy some of these new TrAAckers at a well-known Omaha gun store.   "Do you have any of those new 12 gauge Winchester AA TrAAckers in stock???"  Which made the clerk break out in an uproar of laughter.   I slunk out of the store in shame.   Such a question to ask these days.

Anyhow........Anybody ever gottem and shottem???

Need full report, if you have.

My clear motive here is to try to become proficient at trapshooting without the dreary act of actually practicing.   Learning to shoot a firearm with both eyes open is a whole new phenom.

I read the same literature and am also intrigued.

Yep, I read the Winchester literature, the ShotShow reviews, and watched that video.

Then went out to get some TrAAckers at Guns Unlimited.

None in the store.   Don't know if they are getting any.   Haven't tried the others:   Cabelas, Scheels.

I am working on a new sport called Mashing Clays.   You put the clay birds orange side up on the driveway surface.   Mash 'em with a sledge hammer.    Get many more hits than shooting doubles at the range.

I make it a little sportier. Place them randomly on a cliff/ hillside, pace out 100 yards or so and break out the .22 (or rifle/ pistol caliber of choice) and take aim.  MUCH easier than trying to hit em with one of them confounded shotty guns!

Then...........

You can shoot the pieces.

Into little tiny atoms.   Or 'til you run out of .22 ammo.

Everyplace seems to have them listed as out of stock or coming soon.  Looks like it was introduced at shot show and they way any ammo and that includes clays ammo has been running it may be a little while before we actually see any.  But it does look like it would be a good educational tool.

The educational part comes when everyone finally realizes that the shot and the wad don't take the same path unless they remain one piece

DanW:

Exactly.

Which is the kind of thing that I'm trying to smoke out with my inquiry on this post.

Namely, "Do these newfangled devices actually work?"

Usually, they don't.

SFG, here is a little information about "reading the breaks" of clay targets in flight and I think there is a lot of video that may help answer your questions about ShotKam

DanW:

Lotsa good stuff there.

Will require some study [which I'm pleased to do] instead of just scanning/reading.

Thanks for the tips.    I'm always looking for them.

Worked today on climbing clays [in strong facing wind, plus the trap machine was set about 4 notches high].    My BT-99 shoots a 100% pattern and I still had to snug the bead right up under the clays.

Great fun!   Keeps me out of bars and Hooters places.
