Title: Full circle - learn from history or repeat it
Post by: Dan W on January 07, 2012, 07:15:58 PM
I light of recent events can you name the author of this quote ( no fair googling )

Quote
"Corporations have been enthroned. An era of corruption in high places will follow and the money power will endeavor to prolong its reign by working on the prejudices of the people...until wealth is aggregated in a few hands...and the Republic is destroyed."

Sorry, I had to Google it, so I won't spoil, but it blows my mind how those that came before us could so accurately 'see' what was happing in their times, but also what would happen to/because of future generations.  To quote a favorite line from National Treasure: "People just don't talk like that anymore."  I hope we -U.S.- are not too far gone to never return to being the nation our forefathers envisioned!

I had to Google it too.  It does appear that Santayana was correct about learning from history.   :(

I'm guessing Benjamin Franklin.  Now, I'll Google it.  :)

Nigel Tufnel?  I'll go with Ben Franklin as well.

Sorry Lorimar:

Didn't mean to confuse you with the power of suggestion.   I was wrong, but I won't spoil it for others wishing to guess.  :)

I'm not saying they get everything correct, but according to Snopes (http://www.snopes.com/quotes/lincoln.asp), this quote is falsely attributed.

ETA...And, if you don't like Snopes, here (http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Abraham_Lincoln) is another source.

OK, I'm going for Nostradamus this time.  He seemed to know everything ahead of time!  :)

I was wondering that too, but I can not find an attribution.  Who knows where this stuff comes from.  Snopes (and other similar sights) are full of information on misquotes and theories on where they originated.  I think through history there have been individuals with some reasonably bright thoughts, but they realize their words won't be as widely embraced if the quote comes from "Joe Schmoe" as opposed to "President Abraham Lincoln".
