We will discuss some different techniques, run a few warm-ups, and then: a competitive test! There will be a winner for each particular test who will get a small payout, as well as an overall winner who will get a large payout.

Appropriate Carbine or Rifle (AR-15, AK, FAL, etc)
At least three magazines
Ability to carry at least two magazines on your person
Sling for Rifle
Eye and Ear protection

Very interested, I will have to check my schedule.

Since this is not a basic course, what level of experience is recommended?  I've never taken a carbine course, but I've competed in multigun matches for a few years.  Would that be appropriate?

You'll be fine. My main concern with that final bit of info is (of course) safety.

Now... I'm not saying you'll win :) But you'll definitely learn a few things and have a good time.

DCPrecision will be holding some more carbine courses between now and this shoot. If you want to make sure your up to speed check us out. I'm offering private courses now too so look us up.

John, how many slots do you have open for this?

John, how many slots do you have open for this?

Eight, but I may open it up to ten if there is enough interest.

Skillbuilder clinics may include a wide variety of topic and drills. Some are strictly focused on the fundamentals, while others are designed to "bastardize" the fundamentals by introducing the use of cover and concealment, target discrimination, physical and mental stress, decision making, moving targets, failure to stop targets, incapacitation drills, low-light environments, and much more. The methodology is the same, but the content will vary (obviously this one doesn't include low light, but the rest is up for grabs)

These clinics are a fun way to learn a few things and test yourself against other shooters. So sign up if you think you are Black Ops ™ enough (now I have to pay Thomas a dollar  )

As far as worrying about whether or not you're ready, as long as you can meet the following, you'll be fine. You might just be slow and akward and we can all laugh at you.  ;)

I think I'll come out and do some shooting with you guys. Mark me down as a tentative. If it fills up to capacity I may drop out to allow a less experienced shooter the opportunity but otherwise it sounds fun.

Starting to lay out my tactical outfit for Saturday...  ::)  So no points for tactical beards, but what about head-to-toe multicam?  Or, while not multicam, are there extra points for tactical flip-flops?

That's-----that's just WRONG.

WRONG, I tell you.

But---if we have lots of running, please make sure you wear those.  (If I'm not going to be dead last, I'm going to need whatever help I can get!)

Trying to decide what to wear as well. Don't have too much tactical clothing... Going to be kind of funny looking more than likely... May have to invest in some better gear like magazine pouches and better holster in the future. Shot my pistol yesterday. Wasn't impressed with my accuracy. However, it is a carbine class and the AK was on paper at 100 yds. Bring your $10.00 ya'll!  I'm looking to take your money!!  :-\

Wear one of those cone hats that the vietcong wear. In fact, just come decked out as a VC. You might as well if you're packing an AK ;-)

Went out and shot last weekend for some practice. I'm pretty comfortable shooting from a rest at 100 yds. My pistol shooting was poor at best. Going to decide on all gear tomorrow. Not going to be pretty, but hopefully effective... Going camping after work Friday out that way. Any of you guys know where there is a campground near there that will have a vacancy? I'd settle for a city park or fairground if it had electric. I already tried the "double nickel" and they are booked!  Going to pull the camper out that way and find something hopefully. Otherwise may end up at a hotel!  Can't wait!

Think I should throw a folding table in the Jeep to have a staging and mag prep work area? I'll have duct tape too, so Nick, if you want, you can attach your tactical umbrella to it in between drills for a shaded work area...

I'm just wearing my competition gear.  Since there are no points for tactical beards, I'm gonna be a rebel and not wear ANY camo.  So there!

(I'm pretty sure that Sean will make up for any camo deficiency on my part, anyway.)

I'll be wearing 5.11 tac pants---that gonna make me tactical enough for this?  :)

Great time guys. A big thanks to john, the landowner, and everyone that gave me great advice. I will apply it in the future when I have practice again. I was very intimidated having been the only one with an AK. I sat it down on the table next to ten ARs and asked myself if I was in the right place. Ha!  A good time and great exercises. Thanks to everyone involved.

Agreed.  It was nice to put faces to forum names.  Thanks John for isolating a handful of skills/objectives and assembling drills and stages to practice and then evaluate them.  The talk, practice, test format was very effective.  I definitely walked away with a list of things I need to work on.  Also, big thanks to Ross for hosting the skillbuilder and sharing his land.

Everyone should bring their carbines/rifles to the annual meeting, because John has a great skillbuilder in store for the workshop there!

Thanks Fishguy for letting me run a mag through your AK! If you come to John's next class, I'll let you get some more rounds through my AR.

Wes, I appreciate your lending me your suppressed Glock (that has a manual safety on it).  :)

John, let me know when your rifle starts going into battery with a round in the chamber  ;) My rounds have been getting real dust/dirty as I take them to the range and back multiple times. I bet that Noveske is just going to need clean, factory ammo for a good long time.
Title: Re: MWTS- Carbine Skillbuilder
Post by: wallace11bravo on August 19, 2013, 09:37:11 PM
Hasn't had any issues with any factory ammo, even some questionable "someobscurecompany" reloads. Just your loads.. and, less consistently, mine :)

Thanks to Ross for the use of the range and taking some pics, and thanks to everyone who came out. I'll be working on getting one more skillbuilder scheduled this year, and be sure to bring your boomstick to the NFOA meeting to partake in that skillbuilder. Remember, the methodology is the same, but the training objectives will change, so you'll get a chance to be introduced to different things at each one.

I do have a Combat Carbine class, which focuses on the fundamentals of fighting with a carbine, coming up on the 22nd of September. If you are looking for something in between the skillbuilders and "this is the end the bullet comes out," with a high focus on accuracy, then Combat Carbine is for you.

You can find more info and register online from the link in my sig line.
