2 years ago , I had to go to Mayo.  Not sure about this 5000 dollars just to get in the door.   I went, paid my 25 dollar office co pay, then paid my percentage after deductible.  I saw two different specialists in two different fields and had numerous tests done.  Not once was I ever told I had to have any amount of money to get in the door.  In fact, tests there were slightly less expensive than Creighton.  Mayo is a not for profit facility.

Additionally, for an injury rehab, Madonna in Lincoln is world class.  Why not go there?

I feel bad for this girl, but based solely on the wording of this report, this sounds really odd.

Took my wife to Mayo, in Rochester, about 13 years ago.  We had an individual (not a group plan provided by an employer) insurance plan at the time with a fairly high deductible.  One visit ate up the entire deductible.

I am kinda throwing the BS flag on this.....  As I refer patients there I do know Mayo no longer accepts Medicaid.  However, this does not appear to apply to this situation as the article states they have insurance.  I bet the $5K figure may be the family deductible i.e. "high deductible" HSA type plan.
NO hospital can REQUIRE a "pre-payment" like this family alludes to......

most people think medicad/care is insurance

its a backasswards version so maybe thats what they meant by insurance.
When i worked in ERs for 6 years didn't matter, people showed up we treated.
People would "forget" their SS# and address, and last name, and not know their address

funny how often that happened......

I would have had more respect for those people if when they showed up they said "look, i'm not paying for anything of this, so don't even bother asking for my informaiton"
