Agreed. Does OPD not carry 223? Depending on round and distance it would more than likely over pen also.

The issue with tranqs is they are unpredictable.  1.) Shot placement.  2.) Dosage.  How long to take effect? 3.) If you miss or get a bad hit, you just scare it off and then you have bigger issues. 

No one knew it had a broken leg until it was all over.

In my opinion, having a broken leg makes it even more dangerous.  Wild animals that are injured are even more unpredictable than otherwise.  Even injured domesticated animals can be unpredictable.

You also have to remember 2 things...

1.) Mountain Lions are only dangerous when they are hungry.

2.) Mountain Lions are ALWAYS hungry.


Put it down.

I don't care if it took 100 shots.  They don't care how long it takes you to die and how much you suffer when they incapacitate you and drink your blood and eat your still beating heart.

I've done some testing of various off-the-shelf 00 buck over the years.  Spread depends on the load.

I'm not a big fan of fixed cylinder bore shotguns as having owned several over the years and still own one, the results from shooting them are much like you showed, if one does a little looking he can find self defense shotguns with chokes.

That was not the point of the testing, however.  The point was to determine which manufacturer/model of 00 buck held the tightest pattern at self-defense distances.

The remington 3" magnum 00 buck shells actually produce a pretty star  / cross pattern consistently.  I'm a fan .

One of my eventual goals was to figure out how to load my own shells to produce said pattern heh.

I prefer whatever gun is handy. 

A more serious answer: No, a shotgun is not my first choice for HD.  IMO, a shotgun is a better weapon for an AO where you are not concerned about friendlies.

With that said, I pattern all of my shotguns so I know where my pellets are flying.  I have witnesses who have seen me shoot the head off of a pheasant.

 Back about the mountain lion.

   the guy from game and parks was on KFAB radio this morning.  He stated, that the Game and Parks has a rule, any mountain lion cought in a city is to be destroyed, not relocated. it has lost its fear of people and would never be returned to the wild, ( well as wild as Nebraska is)
