I am still seriously considering a M1903 or M1903A3 from the CMP program. They are currently out of them and dont expect any more before 2011, but I have time to wait. The prices last time they had them were great, and some were is really good shape.

Time to bump this thread...

1918 Remington Model 1891 Mosin. Got it last weekend at the Lincoln Gun Show for less than most refurbished hex receiver 91/30's go for these days. Also included the bayonet with scabbard not pictured. The finish is in darn good shape for being 95 years old. The bore has strong rifling, but is kinda dark. Bolt and floorplate numbers match the receiver.

I'm pretty sure it's not ALL original, but I didn't pay ALL original price for it either...

It has the Izhevsk arrow in triangle mark on the forward edge of the magazine screw hole, and the stock has a capitol A stamped just forward of that. Can't find any other markings on the stock, it seems to have been refinished at some time(they did a nice job on it though) and it also has an arsenal repair just rearward of the receiver. I'll take it apart this weekend to see what is under all that nice wood.

Just a little update...I posted a while back about how my 91/30 wasn't all that accurate. I put a pressure point under the barrel using an oiled piece of felt under the barrel, right at the end of the forend, and it made a huge difference. It shoots pretty much as good as my Finn now, although you still have the horrible Russian trigger to contend with.

I was wondering if anyone else had a U.S. made Mosin running around. I have a Westinghouse that sits in the back of my safe. I think it is stamped 1914 or 1915. The finish has held up well over the years.

The last time I fired it I was pretty surprised. With the cheap surplus ammo I was able to bounce a tin coffee can around and 200 yards. Granted the sight radius is extremely long on that thing too.

I bet it would do even better with quality ammo. In my experience most combloc surplus ammo is pretty inaccurate. With handloads I'm pretty sure I could approach 1 MOA with my M39 if I had a scope on it. My eyes are just not good enough to shoot that well with tangent sights anymore.

If I'm not mistaken all of the Westinghouse Mosins are stamped 1915. There's a difference in if the 'Westinghouse' stamp is in a large arch, small arch, or straight line. I knew of a collector that was trying to match serial number ranges to the shape of the Westinghouse stamp. I'm not sure how that turned out.??

Now that you mentioned it I remember reading that somewhere. Mine is of the straight line variety.

Not sure. Just a bunch of action parts in a zip-lock bag. I have an employee who's interested in them. If he doesn't take them, I'll see if I can come up with more info.
