Holy cow! I went to HS with the shootee.  He was 22 and still a junior at the time as I recall.

His nickname was fireball as he caught his hair on fire in the parking lot whilst trying to start his car.

He was a moron/looser then.  I see things have not changed.

Channel 7 News interviewed the shooter/homeowner. Seems like a decent guy who articulated the need for self defense.

Guess what? The !@#$%^&* Omaha Police Dept took his gun and wrote him a ticket for having an Unregistered handgun.

Update on the KETV website:

OMAHA, Neb. -- A landlord is under investigation for shooting an alleged copper thief in the act.
The shooting happened around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday at one of Wesley Hall’s properties near 32nd Street and Poppleton Avenue.
Investigators said, when Hall encountered the man, a fight broke out, and the 41-year-old was shot in the leg.

Officers gave Hall a ticket because his gun is not registered in Nebraska -- just in California.

He is also a retired LEO according to KMTV.  I thought they had national CCW?

He is ex-USMC and teaches Taekwondo at Kickingtigers near 96th & L St., can't find anything about being ex - LEO.

Correction...
Yeah, here it is on KMTV's website: http://www.kmtv.com/story/14477628/homeowner-catches-copper-thief-in-the-act-and-shoots

"Hall says he was just doing what he's been trained to do.  He's a taekwando instructor, a former Marine, and a former police officer."

Yeah, I had Master Hall teach me in Taekwondo for about 3 years, known him for more than 10.  Great guy.  My only problem was that he taught a philosophy to injure, so that they run away, not to injure till they are able to stop.  But, that's just my opinion.

It sounds like he may have used that same philosophy with his shot placement in this instance too.

Yep Chris...the reporterette made sure to emphasize at the end of her report the gun was not registered with OPD.
Former LEO does not equate to retired LEO with regards to LEOSA rights to carry...and Farmer Rick....there are no "Ex" Marines (unless they got the "Big Cookie" Discharge)...they are Former Marines.  Semper Fi !!!

One last comment....it will be interesting to see what if any charges are levied.  It could be a pretty tough argument to say "I was in fear for my life", and then simply wound the perpetrator.  Also, being a martial artist could make a wiley prosecutor spin that into "why didn't you use your skils to defend your self instead shooting this 'poor lost soul' down on his luck.  Will be interesting to watch.....

Honestly I think this guy really shot himself in the foot. He was doing interviews on the news and doing so without Legal Counsel present.

Definitely not a good idea if you are in a self defense shooting.... I don't care how justified it is, don't talk to reporters, and definitely don't talk to the police without your Legal Counsel present

You would think as a former cop he would have known better.

Psssst. KETV, your bias is showing. Interesting how they took the extra effort to note the theft as alleged but not the shooting...
