New to the mosin nagant club

Just picked up my first Mosin today!  While I'm not excited to clean off the cosmoline, I am excited to shoot!  It's in 'very good' condition and came with, what I believe to be, all of the attachments/extras.

I have taken my "new" mosin completely down and am ready to start cleaning.  Will have to order some ammo as I hope to be ready to shoot pretty soon!

Thanks for the tip, I'm still cleaning up the stock.  Only had one good hot day to leave it in the black-trash-bag-in-the-car deal.  It sweated quite of bit of cosmoline out, but still need to do it again.

By the way, should I care about magnetic/non-magnetic ammo?  I'll be shooting at the Ikes, possibly in vintage matches at some point.

The Ikes doesn't care about steel core.  I shoot pulled 147 gr steel core bullets reloaded into Prvi cases for the Vintage match and they shoot well.  Match bullets would be more accurate, but for shooting from positions they will hold a tighter group than I'm capable of.

Yep, sweat it some more in the plastic bag on the dash. That will get a lot of it out...tough to get every bit of it though. You'll still notice some seeping out when you take it too the range & heat it up from the inside out!

sgammo.com does have some lead core light ball available too. It still has the magnetic case & magnetic jacket on the bullet itself. I have not tried any of it.....yet.

I've found the heavy ball that they have to be very accurate for me.....especially in a 1932 Finnish M27 that I recently acquired.

Actually those were my first 10 shots with the M27.

Another place to check for the surplus ammo is... copesdistributing.net ...they don't always have some & when they do they are a bit higher on their price but they sometimes run specials & always have $9.95 flat rate shipping. I've had good luck there as well.

Let me get her all put back together and I'll post up some pics.  One thing I was pretty amazed about was how few pieces there are when it is completely broken down.

I got this one from my brother out of a lot he sold this summer.  $110 plus tax.  I know they go on sale cheaper at times, but this let me avoid the box store all together.  It came with mostly matching numbers,  and from what I've seen other places, I do have all the accessories.  The bayonet is awesome, in a creepy it-could-kill-you sort of way. 

I'm having trouble finding a long enough cleaning rod.  I pieced one together from a couple of kits I have and promptly broke it off.  Luckily it broke outside the bore so I didn't scratch it up.  I've read that people suggest the Tipton 40 or 44 inch rods, so I've got to track something down I guess.

You may find that it'll hit closer to POA with the bayonet on.....high & right, I believe with it off.

I use a 40" & a 38" to clean mine.

I've read that about the bayonet.  I plan on trying both on and off to see how it shoots.

Wow, the bayonet is TIGHT!  The numbers don't match the rest of the gun, so I'm assuming it was poached from another rifle.  And by tight I mean I-can't-get-it-to-fit, tight.  Any suggestions on how to loosen up the bayonet?  I don't happen to have any old steel the right diameter laying around (youtube suggestion).

Does anyone have a good way to loosen up the bayonet?  There is no way I'm getting that thing on without a mallet, and then it's not coming off.

Maybe wrap emory cloth around a dowel and smooth out the inside of the ring?

yup, what bk said or I've used a cold chisel the right thickness & tapped it with a hammer to spread the slot just a wee-bit & it now fits fine.

I've heard that when the crates of them arrive in the USA the bayonets are there that match number-wise but whoever pulled them out to ship didn't bother to match them up.
