Local Honor Guard needing Rifle Cases!
« on: January 06, 2014, 06:37:11 PM »
Hey all,
I just stumbled across a ad on Craigslist and made the phone call.
Larry with the local VFW posts / Honor Guards is looking to replace their old Rifle cases as their old ones are falling apart, and have been patched together.
As the State's Firearms association, I thought maybe we could pull together and get them some.
We can either come together and buy new ones or gather up some of our no longer used ones.
They need 7 (obviously).
What say you?  Can we do this for the guys that have had our backs all these years?
Contact me and I will set up a time to gather them up.

how fancy do the cases need to be? Plastic hard cases run what $20-$25?  Seems like a good way to get good PR, can't  NFOA cut a check? Seems like a no-brainer.

He really didn't specify.  Said "Even if they were the simple zippered ones, that would work."
I was thinking the soft cases, as I have a few older ones I don't use.
But now am thinking maybe some hard cases would last longer?
I've put out a feeler to a couple suppliers to see if we can get 7 new matching cases cheap.

Whatcha got?

We probably could, but I thought I would see what the members had to offer before I went thru that process.

I would think we could find some shop to order and we buy at cost. Wish i knew more people I would make calls. I do know one guy he is just starting his shop up. He might be able to do something. I will reach out to him.

Would Rod Moeller's shop be willing to sell the cases at a discount?

Count me in for a donation towards new cases ...Need to be at least 45" long for a Garand?

I'd contribute.  Think there's an extra case or 2 around.

If you are going for hard side cases, would it be more economical from a dollar point and a handling point to get double cases rather that single?

WalMart carries Plano 2-scoped rifle, hard side case, model 10586-99, for less that $25.00.  Internal dimension is 51.7 inches.

If the decision is made to purchase new ones, I would contribute cash to the cause.

Way to get involved brothers  :)

Ok, I just talked to Larry again and got more info.
He handles the Honor Guard for VFW posts 3606 (out on W. "A") and 131 (N. 77th)
Sounds like because of the cabinet they are stored in, Soft cases are the best option.
They are using the M1s (.30 carbines from what I can surmise.)
I have a couple guys Moeller Arms, and American Reaper Arms that have expressed interest in helping.

A little background Larry gave me- The money for upkeep of Honor Guard equipment, etc comes from donations from the family or the pockets of the Vets themselves.  They recently picked up a couple on sale at Menards, but said the plastic zippers are already failing.
I envision something like this- just because that's how I am:
http://www.ima-usa.com/u-s-wwii-fleece-lined-m1-carbine-rifle-case-marked-u-s.html

I'm not sure if we can get a break on these somewhere? But Fleece Lined, leather reinforcements, metal YKK zipper. should hold up a long time.  And mostly, historically correct.
What do you guys think?  Think we could set up a fund for such an endeavor?
You know me always thinking, but maybe this is something we can do on a yearly basis?
I mean as much as we "fight" to protect our rights, these guys fought and gave blood, sweat, and tears.
It's the least we could do.

These guys stood in the rain for hours to honor my WWII veteran uncle Howard S. and I owe them a debt of gratitude. So I want them to have a nice case for the rifles and I am willing to do whatever it takes to see that happen.

these are nicer than the ones I have been watching on ebay.  Those are more money and in most cases not lined.  Looking at the website if you sign up for their newsletter you get a 5% discount.

There are a couple versions Rifle Length, Carbine Length, Lined, unlined.  And available on lots of websites, I just picked that one because another was CheaperthanDirt and I knew I would get beat up over posting that.
